PLYMOUTH,
IN (July 12, 2009) -- South Bend's own David Stremme took time out of his busy
schedule to compete in the CRA Super Series race at Plymouth Speedway Sunday
afternoon. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver benefitted from the race invert
which placed Stremme on the pole after qualifying fifth for the 200-lap event.
Stremme led 150 of 200 laps en route to the win in front of, what is thought to
be, the largest crowd ever at the historic 3/8-mile Plymouth Speedway.
On an absolutely gorgeous July afternoon in northern Indiana, 30 cars were
on hand competing in the Summer Championship 200.
In qualifying, Jason Shively set fast time around the picturesque Plymouth
Speedway. Shively's time was 13.049 seconds followed by Jack Landis at 13.077
seconds. Johnny VanDoorn was third followed by JR Roahrig and David Stremme to
round out the list of top five qualifiers.
Shively then drew the number five pill to set the inversion at five
positions for the night's feature race. This put Stremme on the pole with
Mishawaka's JR Roahrig starting with him on the front row.
Stremme led the race's first 100 laps until the race's halfway point in
which teams were allowed 10 minutes to work on their cars.
Stremme opted to change two tires while others opted to change four and
still others opted to run the entire race on the same Hoosier tires they
started the race on.
Jack Landis, one of those opting to not change tires, restarted the race's
second half with the lead while Stremme started behind those drivers opting to
change only one tire or go the entire distance on the same set of tires.
Landis led the next 50 laps before Stremme fought his way back to the front
of the field.
From there, the NASCAR veteran knew exactly what to do. Stremme led the next
final 50 laps en route to claiming his 3rd CRA win by 1.025 seconds over
Landis.
Runner-up Landis was followed to the stripe by Aaron Pierce who started the
race in eighth.
John VanDoorn finished in fourth, while Jason Dietsch finished in fifth
after starting 15th in the 30-car field.
Stremme commented after the race, "It was fun racing here, seeing a lot
of people, racing at Plymouth Speedway. It was fun for everybody."
Stremme added, "There was a lot of passing. The tires were awesome and
never really fell off. It was entertaining for the fans."
Hoosier's Manager of Contract Sales Irish Saunders attended the race, along
with engineer Marc March, to make sure the event was a success for everyone
involved.
The CRA competitors all used Hoosier 3035 (left) and 3045 (right) bias-ply
tires.
