TOLEDO,
OH (May 18, 2008) -- Matt Carter added his name to the growing list of winners
this season in the ARCA RE/MAX Series winning the Hantz Group 200 at
Toledo Speedway on Sunday. The 27-year-old son of NASCAR team owner Travis
Carter led 68 of 204 race laps en route to the win. Carter, making his seventh
series start, becomes the seventh different driver in as many events to win
this year. The event was also the second of the season using the new Hoosier
Tire Short Track Radial.
The new tire proved to be fast in qualifying with 13 drivers breaking the
previous track record set in 2001 by Frank Kimmel. The 9-time series champion
set the old mark using bias-ply tires on a freshly paved track.
Andy Hanson, trying to make his first series start, set fast time among the
39 qualifiers. Hanson flew around the .555-mile oval in just 15.891 seconds-- besting
the old record by nearly a half second. NASCAR veteran Kenny Schrader was
second with a time 16.127 seconds.
Thirty-five cars started Sunday's race under cool, cloudy skies. The race
featured 12 leaders among six different drivers including; Kenny Schrader 1,
41-66 (27), Andy Hanson 2-7, 67-91 (31), Scott Speed 8-40 (33), Michael Simko
92-99 (8), Dexter Bean 100-133, 153-154, 182 (37) and Matt Carter 134-152,
155-181, 183-204 (68).
On the race's final lap, Matt Carter fought off Patrick Sheltra to capture
the win by a scant .115 seconds at the stripe. Dexter Bean finished third
followed by Justin Allgaier and David Ragan to round out the top five.
Scott Speed finished sixth followed by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Andy Hanson,
Ken Schrader and Tom Hessert III rounding out the top ten.
In all, 23 of the 35 starters finished the race on the lead lap. The race
was slowed by cautions 18 times for 114 laps.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. remains atop the driver standings with 1560 points.
With the win, Matt Carter jumps from fourth to second in the rankings with 1550
points. Frank Kimmel drops to third (1530) after finishing Sunday's race in
12th place. Tom Hessert III moves up to fourth (1475), while John Wes Townley
drops to fifth (1470) after finishing 16th.
