KANSAS
CITY, KS (June 1) -- Seventeen-year-old Shelby Howard captured the
second win of his career in the ARCA RE/MAX Series on Sunday at the
1.5-mile Kansas Speedway. Howard's earlier win this season was at
Salem Speedway's .555-mile oval. That victory made him the youngest
driver to ever win an ARCA Series race. Sunday's win now makes him the
youngest driver ever to win a superspeedway race in the series. Howard
took the lead from Rick Carelli on lap 113 en route to winning the
134-lap BPU 200. The short track win in April and now a superspeedway
win by the talented youngster is one of the many attractions of the
ARCA Series now in its 51st season. Shelby, who along with his family,
were chronicled last year on ABC's 20/20 highlighting the ups and
downs the family endured while they supported their son's driving
career.
Thirty-nine cars started the BPU 200 at Kansas
Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Frank Kimmel was on the pole after
capturing the Old Milwaukee Pole Award for his lap of 32.663 seconds
(165.325 mph) around the 1.5-mile superspeedway. It was Kimmel's 30th
career award. Young Shelby Howard joined the series veteran in the
front row with a career-best starting spot.
At the drop of the green flag, Kimmel immediately took
command of the race leading 108 of the race's first 109 laps. But on
lap 110, the crafty veteran gave way to Rick Carelli who led for three
laps before Shelby Howard moved into the lead for good. The Greenwood,
IN driver led the race's final 22 circuits to capture the win by over
four seconds over runner-up Brent Sherman. For Sherman, it was the
second consecutive runner-up finish after starting seventh. Frank
Kimmel settled for a third place finish.
Jason Jarrett, Rick Carelli and Mark Gibson finished
fourth through sixth, respectively, and rounded out the list of
lead-lap finishers.
Other notes: Bob Strait was honored before the race
for making his 200th start in the ARCA Series. Strait finished the
race in seventh place. Wayne Anderson, the NASCAR All Pro Series
driver finished in eighth place making his first-ever series start.
Darrell Basham won the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger Award after starting
33rd and finishing 10th. The race also featured six cautions for a
total of 29 laps. The ARCA Series began the season with five different
race winners with the last four races being won by repeat winners.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. had a full contingent on
hand for the event including ARCA Track Service Manager Doug Barnes,
engineers Ken Kolter and Rick Tostevin, as well as, the regular
Hoosier/ARCA crew members who service the ARCA events.
Frank Kimmel continues to lead the series standings
with 2375 points followed by Jason Jarrett (2025), Billy Venturini
(1900), Shelby Howard (1865) and Brent Sherman (1825).
The Kansas race will be broadcast on the Outdoor
Channel next Sunday at 4 pm ET.
Next up on the ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule is a June
7th stop at Pocono Raceway where Shelby Howard finished 5th last July.
The race will be the 10th on the series' 22-race schedule. The race
also will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 1 pm ET.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. is proud to have been
selected by the ARCA Series to be the exclusive tire supplier during
its 51st season.
