WINCHESTER,
IN (June 25, 2011) -- Indiana's Dakoda Armstrong had plenty of hometown support
before more than 50 of his friends and family in ARCA Racing Series action at
Winchester Speedway Saturday night.
The 19-year-old driver from
nearby New Castle, IN provided plenty of excitement in capturing his third
career victory before a packed house.
The excitement began in
qualifying when Ryan Blaney, son of famous racer Dave Blaney, set a new track
record on the Winchester high banks.
The young Blaney demolished the
old record of 16.319 seconds set in 2007 by Michael McDowell on the half mile
track.
The old record was set using
bias-ply tires while the series now competes on radial tires at all its short
track events.
Blaney's time was 15.837 seconds
or 113.658 mph which narrowly topped previous race winner Ty Dillon who posted
a 15.880 second lap.
The race was dominated by Blaney
who was driving the Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet. Blaney led 154 of 200 race
laps but fell victim to a flat tire late in the race.
The race featured six leaders
among four different drivers including; Ty Dillon 1, 162-189 (29 laps), Ryan
Blaney 2-94, 101-161 (154 laps), Chad Hackenbracht 95-100 (6 laps) and Dakoda
Armstrong 190-200 (11 laps).
Armstrong, who started fifth,
took the win by .900 seconds over Chris Buescher who started third.
Armstrong credited the win to
his crew chief's decision to go with two fresh tires late in the race and
just a splash of fuel en route to the win.
Buescher was followed to the
line by Chad Hackenbracht in third.
Ty Dillon finished fourth
followed by Tom Hessert in fifth.
The 200-lap race had 6 cautions
for a total of 34 laps.
Ty Dillon extends his lead in
the driver standings to 245 points over Frank Kimmel as the series takes a week
off before returning to action July 9, at Berlin Raceway.
