MARNE,
MI (July 26, 2008) -- Rookie Scott Speed won the ARCA RE/MAX 200 at
Berlin Raceway Saturday night becoming the series' first driver to win three
events this season. Speed, who started sixth, fought his way to the front to
lead the race's final 48 laps en route to the win.
Thirty-one cars made the trip to Michigan for the 200-lap race. In qualifying,
Justin Allgaier set a new track record on the .4-mile oval. Allgaier's time was
16.963 seconds (92.955 mph) which bested the old record (17.169) set in 2003 by
Fred Campbell.
The new track record by Allgaier was set using Hoosier's newly developed
short track radial tire. The new tire is being used for the first time this
year at four asphalt short tracks on the 21-race ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule.
This includes races at Berlin, Salem, Cayuga and Toledo.
Thirty-one drivers took the green flag Saturday night in a race that
featured five leaders among four different drivers. Drivers leading during the
race included; Justin Allgaier 1-59 (59 laps), Frank Kimmel 60-107, 130-152 (71
laps), Justin Lofton 108-129 (22 laps) and Scott Speed 153-200 (48 laps).
The race also had 11 cautions for a total of 66 laps with 15 of the 31
starters finishing on the lead lap.
At the finish, Scott Speed beat out Justin Allgaier by a scant .880 seconds
a the finish line. Speed, who won last week's race at Kentucky, becomes the
ARCA RE/MAX Series' first 3-race winner this year.
Defending series champion Frank Kimmel finished in third place followed by
Justin Lofton and Matt Carter to round out the list of top five finishers.
With the win, Scott Speed draws ever-closer to Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in the
driver standings after Stenhouse finished in 7th place. Stenhouse is now 55
points ahead of Speed in the rankings with Frank Kimmel, Matt Carter and Justin
Allgaier rounding out the top five.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series returns to Pocono Raceway this Saturday, August 2.
The earlier race back in June was won by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series competes exclusively on Hoosier racing
tires made in Indiana.
