LONG
POND, PA (August 2, 2008) -- Justin Allgaier led three times including the
race's final 14 laps en route to claiming his third win of the season in the
ARCA RE/MAX Series. The 22-year-old driver led 30 of 80 laps in the Pennsylvania
200 at Pocono Raceway Saturday afternoon. Allgaier held off Scott Speed in
the race's closing moments to secure the win as the series made its second stop
of the season at the 2.5-mile track.
A 45-car field was on hand for qualifying on Friday with Scott Speed setting
the top time around the 2.5-mile Pocono tri-oval. Speed's time was 54.286
seconds (165.789 mph). The former Formula One driver earned 15 bonus points as
the event's top qualifier. Justin Allgaier was second in qualifying with a time
of 54.429 seconds (165.353 mph). Ironically, Speed and Allgaier were the top
two qualifiers in the June race won by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
The 80-lap race featured 10 leaders among four different drivers. Drivers
leading during the event included; Scott Speed 1-18,34,45-49, 56-66 (35 laps),
Chase Mattioli 19-23 (5 laps), Aric Almirola 24-27, 50-55 (10 laps) and Justin
Allgaier 28-33, 35-44, 67-80 (30 laps). The race was also slowed seven times by
cautions for a total of 36 laps.
In the end, a late-race caution set up a 2-lap sprint to the finish with
Justin Allgaier holding off a hard-charging Scott Speed to take the win by a
scant .274 seconds. It was Allgaier's fifth win in the ARCA RE/MAX Series and
first on a superspeedway.
Justin Allgaier and Scott Speed each now have three wins this year in ARCA
RE/MAX Series competition.
Chase Miller finished in third place after starting 29th. Matt Cater
finished in fourth place followed by Robb Brent in fifth.
Jeremy Clements finished in sixth place followed by Ken Butler III, Marc
Davis, John Wes Townley and Gabi DiCarlo in seventh through tenth,
respectively.
With his runner-up finish, Scott Speed takes over the lead in the driver
standings with 3045 points. Matt Carter moves up to second with 2950 points,
while Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. falls from the top spot to third with 2935 points
after finishing a disappointing 30th in Saturday's race. Justin Allgaier (2855)
and Frank Kimmel (2825) round out the top five in the rankings.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series will continue its 21-race schedule with a stop at
