PITTSBURGH,
PA (September 16) -- Defending Renegade STARS champion, Chubb Frank,
won his fifth event of the season, winning the "13th Annual
Pittsburgher 100" at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on
Sunday. Frank collected $22,000 for the win and an additional $100 for
a preliminary heat race win, for a total of $22,100. Frank, also the
current series point leader took the lead on lap 11 and led the
remaining 90 laps to capture the 100-lap checkered flag.
A stout
79-car field was on hand for qualifying with R.J. Conley posting fast
time at 19.665 seconds around the 1/2-mile oval, followed closely by
Steve Francis at 19.686 seconds. Five 15-lap preliminary heat races
were needed to narrow the large field for the 100-lap main event. Heat
race winners included, Chub Frank, Steve Shaver, John Flinner, John
Mason and Bart Hartman. In the Dash race, the finish determined the
first three rows in the main event. Chub Frank took the Dash win
followed by Tim Hitt, Steve Francis, D.J. Myers, R.J. Conley and Rick
Eckert. With those six leading the 28-car field to the starting
line, outside pole sitter, Tim Hitt, used the high line to jump into
the lead at the drop of the green flag. Hitt led until lap 11, when
Frank moved into the race lead. Frank led the remainder of the way,
not without a challenge. Scott Bloomquist, the hottest UDTRA driver
right now, charged all the way from his 19th starting position to
second place when a lap 99 caution set up a final one-lap shootout.
The green and white flag restart had Frank using the low line and
Bloomquist on the high line. Frank would take the checkered flag with
Bloomquist right on his rear bumper to claim the runner-up spot. Bloomquist
pocketed $7,040 for his second place finish. Coming home third was
Rick Eckert who earned $5,035 for his effort. Rounding out the top
five was Gary Stuhler fourth and Mike Balzano in fifth. Hoosier
