OREGON,
Wis. — The ASA Midwest Tour’s decision to compete on a different compound
of Hoosier tires were catching everyone’s attention at Saturday’s practice
for Sunday’s season opening event, the 4th Annual Joe Shear Classic at
Madison Int’l Speedway.
So
fast, many are asking if the eight-year-old track record could be in jeopardy.
Jason
Weinkauf’s fast time in the final practice session of 17.452 came within
0.039 seconds of an eight-year Super Late Model track record by Andrew
Morrissey who set the mark of 17.413 seconds in 2004. What is interesting is
that Morrissey set the track record using a 4-bbl carburetor, and the ASA
Midwest Tour competes on2-bbl carburetors.
This
season the ASA Midwest Tour decided to go from Hoosier’s F-40 on the left and
F-50 tires on the right to F-25 (left) and F-48 (right). Overall after
today’s practice with 35 cars on hand, the top-eleven had a lap under last
year’s fast lap time of 17.672 set by Bryan Reffner.
“The
tires are really fast, they have a lot of grip,” Chris Wimmer, ASA Midwest
Tour competitor said after his practice session. “They feel really good. They
make the driver feel really good. It’s a little bit different then what we
were running on last year. I always had an uneasy feeling with those tires, as
they never seemed to come in for us. These tires are neat, hopefully they wear
out a little bit and they will put on a good race.”
Wimmer
also stated that with the tires wearing off during the 100-lap race on Sunday,
the possibility is good to see many moving from the front to the back and back
moving the front, which could provide an entertaining show on Wisconsin’s
Fastest Half-Mile Oval.
Qualifying
is scheduled to get underway at 1:00pm on Sunday with racing scheduled to begin
at 2:30pm. The MIS Late Models will also be in action with the ASA Midwest
TourSuper Late Models.
