OREGON,
WI (May 27, 2005) -- Stevens Point, Wisconsin's Bryan Reffner, making his
first-ever series start, captured the ASA Late Model Series "Bryden Motors
100" at Madison International Speedway Saturday night before a cheering,
hometown crowd of supporters. Reffner started 11th in the 26-car field en route
to the win. The race attracted an astounding 53 entries as the series continues
to prosper in its inaugural season using Hoosier radial tires.
Tires Used:
Left Side: 10.0/27.0-15 ASALMS 6040 (radials)
Right Side: 10.0/27.5-15 ASALMS 6050 (radials)
Forty-eight cars posted times in qualifying with 15-year-old Landon Cassill
claiming the fastest time when he circled the 1/2-mile speed plant in 18.157
seconds (99.135 mph) on his second qualifying lap. Previous race winner Steven
Leicht was second fastest at 18.187 seconds. The ASA Late Model Series had a
6-car invert which put Doug True on the pole and Tom Gille alongside, while
Leicht and Cassill started fifth and sixth, respectively.
Gille took the lead as the race began and led through the 27th lap before
Steven Leicht made his way to the front. Leicht led the next 16 laps before
11th starting Bryan Reffner passed the 18-year-old on lap 43. From there,
Reffner had Leicht on his bumper until lap 84 when Leicht's engine dropped a
valve costing him any chance of his second win of the season.
Reffner took the checkered flag with Leicht limping home in second place
followed by fast qualifier Landon Cassill. Bobby Wilberg finished in fourth
place followed by Ryan Carlson, Chad Wood, Brian Campbell, Doug True, defending
series champion Bobby Stremme and J. Travis Herbst in fifth through tenth, respectively.
The 100-lap race was slowed by just three cautions. ASA rules do not count laps
run under caution thus treating the fans to 100 green-flag laps of
racing.
Jesse Saunders won the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout for drivers not
making the feature race. Saunders topped the 20-car field after starting 4th.
Quote from race winner Bryan Reffner: "I was very happy with
the (Hoosier) tires. They stayed under me the entire race."
Quote from Late Model Asphalt Product Manager Terry Newton: "Despite
the short rain delay, the program came off extremely well today. I was very
pleased with the performance of the (Hoosier) tires. There was just one caution
in the final 99 laps which says a lot about the talent level of the drivers in
the ASA Late Model Series and the radial tires we are providing the
series."
The ASA Late Model Series will be back in action this Saturday, June 4th, at
Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, IN. For more information about the ASA
