SCHERERVILLE,
IN (September 13) -- Eddie Hoffman won the 42nd annual
"Tony Bettenhausen Memorial Classic 100" at Illiana Speedway
on Saturday night. Hoffman was the fastest qualifier of the 37
entries, but had to charge from the rear of the field after making
contact on the eighth lap with last year's race winner Pat Kelly.
Despite the setback, Hoffman would not be denied capturing his third
career win in the annual race. He skillfully moved up through the
25-car field finally taking the lead on lap 86. When the checkered
flag fell, Hoffman took the $3,000 win over the 2002 Illiana track
champion Boris Jurkovic, Brett Sontag, this year's track champion Dave
Weltmeyer and Mike Monroe in second through fifth place, respectively.
Hoffman, a regular at the 1/2-mile paved track, also had five feature
wins at Illiana Speedway which uses Hoosier tires exclusively in its
late model divisions.
