TULSA,
OK (January 8) -- The second night of action at the 18th Annual Chili
Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway had young Jason Leffler
capturing the win in the night's 25-lap feature while riding the same
Hoosier RD12 compound as last night's winner Danny Lasoski.
Leffler started the feature in eighth and used the top cushion to
rocket into the lead on lap nine. Finishing in second place was 1988
winner Scott Hatton followed by Tracy Hines in third and 2002 winner Tony
Stewart in fourth. As a result, the four
drivers have locked in starting spots in Saturday's feature finale.
Night number two had 69 drivers competing in 10
preliminary heat races with 54 of them riding on Hoosier tires. Eight
of the ten heat race winners rode atop the Hoosier brand en route to
their 10-lap wins on the indoor dirt track. Cameron Dodson, Brandon
Waelti, Gary Wright, Aaron Fike, Scott Hatton, Donnie Beechler, Bryan
Clauson and Tony Stewart were the eight heat winners riding on Hoosier
racing tires.
The 25-lap feature had 16 of the 22 starters riding on
Hoosiers. Jason Leffler was one of them and moved from eighth place to
the race lead on lap nine using a Hoosier RD12 right rear tire
compound. Leffler held off the late-race challenges of 1988 Chili Bowl
champion Scott Hatton to capture the win.
Leffler was followed to the finish line by Scott
Hatton, Tracy Hines, and Tony Stewart. The four have now earned
transfer spots into Saturday's big race.
After two nights of racing, a total of eight drivers
are guaranteed a spot in Saturday's finale. All eight are drivers
using the Hoosier brand.
Donnie Beechler, Aaron Fike and Gary Wright finished
fifth through seventh, respectively, giving Team-Hoosier a sweep of
the first seven positions. The Hoosier RD12 compound proved, for the
second night in a row, it was the recipe to beat.
Drivers not competing on Wednesday and Thursday
will get their chance tonight as qualifying racing resumes.
