TULSA,
OK (January 8) -- Greenfield, Indiana's Tracy Hines won Saturday's
50-lap Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway while riding
on Hoosier midget tires. Hines, winner of Thursday's 25-lap
preliminary, started from the pole alongside Wednesday's winner Josh
Ford who also competed on Hoosier tires. Hines led flag-to-flag en
route to the historic win and becomes the 14th different winner in the
19 Chili Bowl races contested since the first in 1987 won by the late
Rich Vogler. The annual Chili Bowl event is unique in that there are
no rules which has brought out the best in race car design including
some rather unusual looking cars such as one that used a motorcycle tire
on the left front position in an effort to reduce the overall weight
of the car.
Two hundred fifty, or so, cars competed in the four
day event with most riding on Hoosier tires. The top four finishers in
the three preliminary races held the previous three days were locked
into Saturday's 50-lap finale. The remaining drivers had to battle
their way into the feature race through a series of qualifying races
beginning for the first time ever with a "J" Main to accommodate
the record field.
The feature had 24 starters with 19 riding on the
Hoosier brand. Thursday's winner Tracy Hines, riding on a D10/RD12
rear drive combination, started on the pole with Josh Ford alongside.
The Hoosier-shod Hines took command of the race from the outset
leading all 50 laps en route to the win as Hoosier-shod drivers
claimed seven of the top eight spots and 14 of the first 16 positions
in the night's feature race.
Other top ten finishers on Hoosier tires included Dave
Darland third (D12/RD12), Josh Ford fourth (D12/RD12), Ray Bull fifth
(D12/RD12), New Zealand's Michael Pickens sixth, P.J. Jones seventh,
Bobby East eighth and Brian Gerster in tenth.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. extends its heartfelt
congratulations to Tracy Hines for notching his name among the
prestigious list of winners at the annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.
Our thanks to Hoosier's Irish Saunders who attended
the four-day event and provided the details used in this report.
