BAKERSFIELD,
CA (March 22) -- In the second series race of the season, Dan Holtz
won his first career NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series race Saturday
night at Mesa Marin Speedway. Holtz, after starting on the pole, had
to battle back from a lap down in capturing the historic win. Holtz
was the 2001 track champion at the Mesa Marin 1/2-mile track Hoosier
Racing Tire Corp. begins the 2003 season as the exclusive tire
supplier to the series.
Thirty cars started the race with Dan Holtz, driving a
Ford, on the pole after winning the Bud Pole Award for his qualifying
lap of 19.016 seconds (94.657 mph).
When the green flag fell starting the race, outside
pole-sitter Craig Raudman used the high line to take the early race
lead. Raudman led until lap 75, when Doug McCoun took over the race
lead. McCoun's lead lasted until lap 119, when Eddy McKean moved into
the race lead. But on lap 151, Dan Holtz charged back into the race
lead after falling a lap down midway through the race due to a pit
miscue. Holtz defended the race lead and took the checkered flag on
lap 200.
The win was Holtz's first career win in the NASCAR
Elite Division. Holtz collected $4,325 for the win. Auggie Vidovich
finished in second place after starting tenth. The runner-up pocketed
$2,700. Eric Holmes rounded out the top three while collecting $1,750.
Greg Voigt finished in fourth after starting way back
in 27th, while Todd Souza rounded out the top five.
The series takes a one-week respite before returning
to action on April 5, at Cajun Speedway in El Cajon, CA.
