FONTANA,
CA (October 30-31) -- The Grand American Road Racing Association
completed its final event of the season over the weekend at California
Speedway. In the Grand-Am Cup Series which competes exclusively on
Hoosier tires, it all came down to the Lexus Grand American 250 in
determining this year's champion in both the Grand Sport (GS) and
Sport Touring (ST) classes. When the race was over, two
come-from-behind champions were crowned while one of the most exciting
seasons in series history comes to a close. While in the Rolex Series,
the driving-duo of Marc Bunting and Andy Lally only had to each
compete under green flag conditions to claim the SGS class
championship. A lap two caution enabled a driver change and the
championship was won when the race went green again on lap number
five. This is the first season the SGS class has been in competition
in the Rolex Series and also runs exclusively on Hoosier tires. Next
year, the Hoosier brand will be the only tire used by all classes in
both the Grand-Am Cup Series and the Rolex Series.
GRAND-AM CUP SERIES - GS CLASS
|
|
FONTANA,
CA (October 30) -- Forty-eight cars began Saturday's Lexus Grand
American 250 with 30 of them competing in the GS class. Terry
Borcheller entered the race leading the driver rankings by just four
points over Craig Stanton. The race was won by Greg Wilkins and Dave
Lacey in the No. 17 Doncaster Racing Porsche 996 followed by No. 44
TheRaceSite.com Racing Porsche 996 driven by Will and Wayne Nonemaker.
Finishing in third place was Blake Rosser and Kelly Collins driving
the No. 23 Unitech Racing Nissan 350Z. The championship contenders
had their problems, however, with Craig Stanton (and co-driver David Murry) finishing
13th after encountering mechanical woes, while Terry Borcheller (and
co-driver Devon Powell) finishing in 17th place after being involved in
an accident. Amazingly, the former driving partners of Stanton and
Borcheller ended the year tied with 260 points each. The championship
was then awarded to the driver with the most victories which was
Stanton who had six wins to Borcheller's four. Interestingly, three of
Stanton's wins came when he was co-driver with Borcheller.
GRAND-AM CUP SERIES - ST CLASS
|
|
FONTANA,
CA (October 30) -- The excitement was much of the same in the ST class
portion of the race with Will Turner and Don Salama entering the final
event just eight points ahead of Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell.
Eighteen of the 40 cars on the track for the event were competing in
the ST class. When the race was over, Tremblay and Haskell had secured
a runner-up finish. The question was, was it good enough to overcome
the 8-point deficit? It turned out to be enough when the point leaders entering the event
made contact with another competitor on lap 75 of the race resulting
in a disappointing 10th place finish. The dramatic events had David
Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay capturing the 2004 ST class driver
championship. Bob Beede and Bob Endicott won the race driving the No.
27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Acura RSX-S followed by Haskell and
Tremblay. Daniel Colembie and Ken Dobson finished in third place
driving the No. 12 TC Kline Racing BMW Z4.
ROLEX SERIES - SGS CLASS
|
|
FONTANA,
CA (October 31) -- Thirty-nine cars were in competition in the Rolex
Series Lexus Grand American 400k at California Speedway on Sunday with
11 of them competing in the SGS class which runs exclusively on
Hoosier tires. Marc Bunting and Andy Lally entered Sunday's race with
a large enough lead in the driver standings that they needed only to each take a
lap under green flag conditions to capture the 2004 championship in
the SGS class. The pair accomplished their mission in just five laps
of the event when Bunting brought the No. 38 TPC Racing Porsche GT3
Cup car into the pits when a lap two caution came out. Andy Lally
jumped in for a turn at the wheel and when the race went green on the
fifth circuit, the pair had captured the SGS class championship. With
the title secured, the duo enjoyed a nice Sunday drive leading most of
the race until a late-race pit stop resulted in a second place finish
behind Californians Gene Sigal and Harrison Brix driving the No. 4
Grease Monkey Racing Porsche GT3 Cup. It was their first-ever Rolex
Series win. Following class champions Bunting and Lally to the finish
line was TPC Racing's No. 38 Porsche GT3 Cup driven by Michael Levitas
and Randy Probst in third place.
The 2004 season was the first and last for the SGS class.
The class will be combined with the GT class next year in the Rolex
Series.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. was proud to have
participated in the Grand American Road Racing Association this year
as one of three exclusive tire providers. The entire Hoosier
organization is also looking forward to being the exclusive tire
supplier to all classes competing in both the Grand-Am Cup Series and
Rolex Series beginning in 2005.
