FONTANA,
CA (April 2-3) -- The Grand American Road
Racing Association's Rolex and Grand-Am Cup Series were both in action over the weekend at California
Speedway's 2.8-mile road course. It was the third race of the 2005 season for
each series. Hoosier tires, since being tapped as the sanctioning bodies exclusive
tire brand, were again part of history during the Rolex Series race. The event
ended in the closest finish in series history. A mere .096 seconds separated
first and second place. This was on the heels of the Grand Prix of Miami race
which was the second closest finish ever (1.198 seconds). Scott Pruett and
co-driver Luis Diaz, driving the No. 01 CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing Lexus
Riley, captured the win in the Ferrari Maserati 400 in the Daytona Protoype (DP)
class. Pruett also broke the win streak of the Sun
Trust Racing No. 10 which had won the first two races of the season. The Sun
Trust Racing Team and drivers Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli did, however,
finish in second place narrowly missing claiming their third win in a row. Bill Auberlen and
Joey Hand finished first in the Grand Touring (GT) class--17th overall. The
Grand-Am Cup Series California 200 was contested on Saturday with James
Gue and Gunnar Jeannette taking the overall win in the Grand Sport (GS) class
with David Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay taking the win in the Sport Touring
(ST) class--24th overall.
CALIFORNIA 200
GRAND-AM CUP SERIES RACE
FONTANA, CA (April 2) -- The California 200 race had an astounding
71 entries. Forty-nine were scheduled to compete in the GS class and 22 entered
in the ST class with 64 cars actually competing in the race. James Gue and
Gunnar Jeannette taking the overall win in the Grand Sport (GS) class with
David Haskell and Sylvain Tremblay taking the win in the Sport Touring (ST)
class--24th overall.
James Gue and Gunnar Jeannette, driving
the No. 05 Multimatic Motorsports Mustang, had a best lap time of 1:48.419 in
lap number 68 of 71 laps completed.

James Gue: "There was a
bit of concern early on in the race with all the traffic. (I) had a bit of a
handling issue--something we have been struggling with all weekend and with the
hot track finding rear grip was a bit of a problem. Once the fuel load came
down and the track cooled down a bit I was able to move back up in the
field."
The
exciting race had five lead changes along with five cautions periods for a
total of 19 laps.
GRAND AMERICAN 400
ROLEX SERIES EVENT
FONTANA, CA (April 3) -- The Ferrari Maserati 400 at California
Speedway had 46 entries with 22 DP cars scheduled to compete and 24 GT cars
entered with 45 cars actually taking the green flag.
Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz, driving the No. 01 CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing
Lexus Riley, took the Daytona Protoype (DP) victory in the Ferrari Maserati
400. Pruett broke the win streak of the Sun Trust Racing No. 10 which had
won the first two races of the season. crossing the line .096 seconds
ahead of Sun Trust Racing driver Max Angelleli.
The winning CompUSA No. 01 had a best lap time of
1:33.764 in
lap number 79 of 86 laps completed.
Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand finished first in the Grand Touring (GT)
class--17th overall.
Both the
Rolex and Grand-Am Cup Series are back in action on April 29-May 1, at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca's 2.2238-mile road course in Monterey, CA.
