HOMESTEAD,
FL (March 2) -- The 2.21 mile road course of Homestead-Miami Speedway
played host to the second round of the Grand America Road Racing
Association's Grand-Am Cup this past weekend. The flat turns of the
oval track coupled with the tight infield sections of this unique
circuit challenged the 72 entrants for Saturday's race. In the end,
two new teams emerged victorious to share the winner's podium with two
repeat winners. Lance Stewart and John Bourassa drove their Porsche
911 to the Super Grand Sports Class and the overall titles,
Speedsource drivers Sylvain Tremblay and David Haskell recorded their
first Grand Sports triumph, Power Racing made it two in a row in
Sports Touring, and 2000 C2K Champions Honda of America claimed their
second win of the young season.
Super Grand Sport
It appeared throughout most of Saturday's three-hour event that
the Corvettes might dominate SGS action for the second straight event.
Phoenix American Motorsports drivers John Heinricy and Bill Lester
teamed to place their #35 Corvette into the lead for most of the
event, leaving Team Hurricane and Mical Motorsports to battle for
second position. Daytona winner Powell Motorsports struggled with a
smoking engine throughout the race, while Heinricy continued to
stretch his advantage. The complexion of the race changed with only 45
minutes left in the event. With Heinricy at the controls, the Phoenix
American Corvette slowed and pulled out of the race with engine
problems. From there, it was all Team Hurricane. Lance Stewart battled
back from nearly two laps down to bring his #76 Porsche home 4.1
seconds ahead of the Mical Motorsports and Motorsports Technologies
Porsche TT's, giving the German manufacturer its first sweep of SGS
competition in the 2001 season.
Grand Sport
Porsche was also the top story in Grand Sports competition at
Homestead. The Speedsource prepared Porsche 911 of Sylvain Tremblay
and David Haskell not only captured the pole position, they took the
class victory in only their second race with the new machine. The
Speedsource team pulled away to a full-lap victory in the three-hour
event despite some impressive laps posted by the TF Racing Mustangs.
The #46 Mustang of Peter Sachs and Chuck Snipes set the fastest race
lap, nearly 1/2 a second faster than the Porsche, but could only
salvage a fifth place finish. TF Racing did place two other drivers on
the victory podium in Homestead as the #75 and #74 team cars came home
second and third. Daytona GS winners Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner
struggled to a 17th place class finish, pulling from the race with 13
minutes remaining.
Sport-Touring
Sixteen of the 72 cars entered for Saturday's event in Homestead
lined up for the Sport Touring battle on the 2.21 mile road course.
Daytona winners Mike Keravich III and Jason Potter led the ST class to
the green flag. That is just where the Power Racing Acura Integra Type
R would remain as the #77 captured its second ST class victory in as
many races. After opening a large advantage on the field with lap
times nearly two seconds faster than last year, Keravich handed the
car over to Potter to complete the event. Meanwhile, Karavich climbed
aboard the Power Racing team car and proceeded to come home in sixth.
Villaconn International crossed the line in second with their BMW Z3,
while The Data Clean Spirit of Miami Acura came home in third.
C2K
They might want to rename the C2K class the HART class. For the
second straight event, and the ninth in a row, Honda of America Racing
Team drove to victory in the class. 2000 C2K champions Bryan Johnson
and Pete Halsmer took the victory honors for HART in Homestead, with a
dominating performance that would have placed them second in the ST
standings if classes were scored together. Second place finishers
Planet Earth Motorsports gave HART plenty of competition throughout
the day. Wayne and Will Nonnamaker brought their Acura Integra GSR
home in second in the event,, setting the fast time of the event at
1:37.80 along the way. John Schmitt and Kevin Adams shared the podium
with their HART teammates with a third place finish.
