HOUGHTON
LAKE, MI (September 2, 2005) -- Ten-year-old Charlie Howe of Beaverton, MI won
the Houghton Lake Kart Speedway season championship feature race and in the
process captured the points title for the Rookie Junior class in his very first
season of competition. Charlie captured the championship while riding on
Hoosier tires. Charlie is the grandson of former stock car standout and famous
chassis builder Ed Howe and is the son of former racer Chas and Dina Howe who
operate Howe Racing Enterprises in Beaverton, MI.
The Rookie Junior class is for drivers 9-12 years old and requires a purple
restrictor plate competing at 250 lbs. Charlie started the final points race of
the season with a slim 20 point lead over 2004 Micro Division champ Trent Moore
of West Branch, MI. Charlie took over the points lead with just two events
remaining in the 2005 campaign erasing an 80-point deficit to snatch the Rookie
Junior class title.
By virtue of their season points ranking, the final race of the season had
Charlie on the pole with Trent alongside. After two failed attempts to start
the 15-lap race due to mid-pack tangles, officials opted for a single file
start. That was all Charlie needed leading all 15 laps en route to claiming the
win and the championship.
Among Charlie's growing list of accomplishments this year, the third
generation driver put together a string of nine straight events in which he set
fast time including a season-best time of 11.02 seconds. Charlie also had four
wins in 14 feature races posting 12 top-five feature finishes, while amassing
11 heat race wins and a dash win.
Ironically, of the 18 drivers in his division, Charlie was the only one
using the Hoosier brand. Charlie's proud father Chas noted, "The Hoosier
D10 compound was the perfect match for the cool weather conditions common to
the northern Michigan dirt track both early and late in the season." Chas
added, "The D10 also proved to be a valuable weapon in the wet conditions
we encountered in qualifying."
Charlie's kart was mounted atop a pair of Hoosier 35.0/8.10-6 D10 tires on
his right side and a Hoosier 33.5/5.5-6 D10 on his left side.
The fun wasn't over for Charlie when the following week the young hot-shoe
returned to the track to capture yet another win. Charlie won the 25-lap
season-ending "Australian Pursuit" non-points special. The youngster
started third but quickly moved into the lead by the 15th circuit en route to
the win using Hoosier D10's on all four corners.
And if that wasn't enough, the family packed up and made the trip to nearby
Oil City Speedway where Charlie won his fourth feature in a row after starting
at the rear of the field! The loosely packed conditions once again proved well
suited to the Hoosier D10 compound.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. extends its warm congratulations to Charlie and
the entire Howe family for their success this season while competing on Hoosier
racing tires.
