IN (May 24, 2008) – On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, with a field of
forty-six cars Jamie Holtom dominated the opening portion of Grand-Am KONI
Challenge Series Street Tuner (ST) race at Lime Rock Park, Massachusetts
teammate Eric Curran prevailed in a 10-lap sprint to the finish to win the
second race of the season in the No. 01 Georgian Bay Motorsports Chevrolet
Cobalt.
Curran pulled away on the final restart, and won by 1.013 seconds over the No.
146 Freedom Autosports Mazda RX-8 of Tom Long, while Matt Plumb took third on
the final lap in the No. 29 Bill Fenton Motorsports Honda Civic Si, over the
No. 86 Classic BMW-Plano BMW Z4 of Pierre Kleinubing that was started by Toby
Grahovic.
The Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series also held a two-and-a-half hour race for
the Grand Sport (GS) class at 9:45 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2008. Bryan Ortiz
started from the pole in the No. 97 Turner Motorsports BMW M3 after breaking
the track record in qualifying, and was joined on the front row by Kris Wilson
in the C-Max/Unitech Racing Porsche 997.
Last year, Jep Thornton and Jeff Segal won the Grand-Am KONI Challenge Series
Grand Sport championship without winning a single race.
Monday, the pair combined to give Automatic Racing its first victory, steering
the No. 09 BMW M3 to win the two and a half hour Grand Sport race before a
sun-splashed crowd at the traditional Memorial Day race at historic Lime Rock
Park.
Jeff Segal passed the No. 5 Blackforest Motorsports BMW M3 of Tom Nastasi on
lap 70, and led the final 71 laps to win the Round 2 of the 2008 season.
Finishing second, 2.302 seconds back, was the No. 39 TRG Motorsports Porsche
997 of Spencer Pumpelly and Duncan Ende. Pumpelly passed James Gue, in the No.
37, Mustang GT, JBS Motorsports team for the runner-up position with 10 laps
remaining.
Daytona Fresh From Florida 200 winner Craig Stanton was joined by Jon Miller
in the fourth-place No. 83 BGB Motorsports Porsche 997. Rounding out the top
five was early race leader Kris Wilson, joined by Lonnie Pechnik in the No. 25
C-Max/Unitech Racing Porsche 997.
The race will also be televised (tape delayed) on Saturday, May 31th at 8 PM
EST on SPEED Channel.
Hoosier Racing Tire is proud to be the sole racing tire provider for the Koni
Challenge racing series. This weekend race was serviced by Hoosier’s service
team of: Scott Huffer, Doug Barnes, Chris Grossman, Rick Sisk, Chris
Bartholomew, Jim Bartholomew, Mike Haenes, Jeff Yute and engineer Matt Marlow.
The weather stayed in the mid-60’s and low 70’s all weekend with a bit of
cloud cover most days, making for good racing conditions, along with great
tire performance.
The next action for the KONI Challenge will be June 13, 2008 at Mosport
International Raceway, Bowmanville, Ontario.
