PA -- West Virginia's Mike Balzano won the 2005 Mid-American Championship
Series (MACS) title after the season's final race was cancelled after being
rained out twice. Balzano won the championship by 38 points over fellow
Hoosier-shod driver Robbie Blair as five of the top six drivers in the final
driver rankings rode on the Hoosier brand. Moreover, 15 of the 18 race winners
during the season rode on the Indiana-based purple tire brand. Hoosier also
swept the MACS events at Challenger, Lernerville and Hesston Speedways--three
tracks that feature some of the toughest weekly regional late model drivers in
Balzano, a 26-year racing veteran, claimed two wins during the year and
amassed 17 top 5 finishes, while never finishing outside the top ten all
Bazano ended the season with 2465 points followed by Robbie Blair with 2427
points. Rod Conley was third with 2329 points. Conley's finish gave Team
Hoosier a sweep of the top three spots in the final standings, while Alex
Ferree and Devin Friese finished fifth and sixth, respectively, using the
The Pennsylvania-based Mid-American Championship Series had a phenomenal
2005 season with 326 drivers in competition from 18 different states. The
series also averaged 43 cars per event and enjoyed 12 different winners in the
18 races contested this year.
The MACS operates as a Super Dirt Late Model sanctioning body solely owned
by brothers Jeff and Andy Geesey.
MACS has been in existence since 1997 and before that operated as the North
East Winners Series (NEWS). Mike Balzano joins past winners Robbie Blair
(2004), Chuck Harper (2003), Jack Pencil (2002), Mike Blose (2001), Lyn Geisler
(2000 & 1999) and Denny Chamberlain (1998 & 1997).
Hoosier Oval Track Dirt Product Manager Shanon Rush commented, "Mike's
consistency throughout the season was astounding and he deserves the MACS
championship. Mike can add the MACS trophy to those he won in the All Star Circuit
of Champions back in 1987 and the two crowns in the Renegade STARS Series in
1988 and 1989."
