THOMPSON,
CT (October 25) -- Tony Hirschman led twice in Saturday's NASCAR
Featherlite Modified Series "XTRAMart World Series" at
Thompson International Speedway including the final 41 laps en route
to winning $5,700. For Hirschman, (left in photo) it was his second
win of the season--both at Thompson. But it was Todd Szegedy (right in
photo) who won the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series championship
when he finished in eighth place. It was Szegedy's first series
championship for the Ridgefield, CT driver. Chuck Hossfeld settled for
runner-up honors in the final rankings--32 points behind champion
Szegedy. John Blewett III finished the season in third place--106
points behind Szegedy. Teddy Christopher and Jerry Marquis rounded out
the top five in the final standings in the series. For Szegedy, the
championship comes on the heels of winning the NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series' Rookie of the Year Award last season.
Thirty-two cars started the 125-lap "XTRAMart
World Series" at Thompson International Speedway on Saturday with
Tony Hirschman on the pole and Jimmy Kuhn alongside.
Hirschman took the race lead from the green flag and
led until lap 47, when John Blewett III moved into the lead. Blewett
led the next 17 laps before Jerry Marquis assumed the race lead on lap
64. Marquis led the next 21 laps until Hirschman regained the race
lead with 41 laps to go. Hirschman led the rest of the distance to
capture his second win of the season. Ironically, both wins came at
Thompson.
Eddie Flemke finished in second place followed by
Charlie Pasteryak, Rick Fuller and Mike Stefanik as 17 of the 32 race
starters finished the race on the lead-lap.
Rounding out the list of top ten finishers were Jaime
Tomaino in sixth followed by Chuck Hossfeld, Todd Szegedy, Carl
Pasteryak and Eric Beers.
With his eighth place finish, Todd Szegedy wins the
2003 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series championship with 2716 points
over Chuck Hossfeld (2684), John Blewett III (2610), Ted Christopher
(2520), and Jerry Marquis (2501). Szegedy had the most wins in the
series with four wins in the 18 races contested this year.
