IN (May 28) -- For the second consecutive weekend, three of the five
NASCAR Touring divisions that Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. provides tires
for were to be in action and for the second consecutive week only two
races were contested with a third postponed due to rain. The NASCAR
Featherlite Modified Series was to have contested the Haynes
Connecticut Classic 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway but rain forced its
postponement until this Friday, May 30th. In the two divisions that
were able to complete their scheduled races, Jeff Jefferson won the
Raybestos Northwest Series race in Wenatchee, WA, while Ron Breese,
Jr. (at right) won the International Truck & Engine Midwest Series
race at Illinois' Grundy County Speedway.
NASCAR RAYBESTOS NORTHWEST SERIES
WENATCHEE, WA (May 24) -- Outside pole-sitter Jeff Jefferson
captured his first NASCAR Northwest Series race of the season and
third of his career winning the Cellular One 125, at Wenatchee
Valley's Super Oval. Jefferson took the lead from pole-sitter Ed
Watson on the third lap and led the final 123 circuits en route to the
win.
Twenty-six cars attempted to make the 22-car field on the
1/4-mile Wenatchee oval. When this one was over most all the 22
combatant's cars showed the affects of running 125 circuits on a tight
1/4-mile track. The race had eight cautions for 51 laps and was summed
up best by fourth place finisher Gary Lewis, "The best way I
could describe this night would be race car pinball."
Jeff Jefferson collected $2,400 for the win. Finishing
in second place was third starting Chris Hart who pocketed $2,000.
Rounding out the top three was eighth starting Kevin Hamlin.
With the win, Jeff Jefferson takes over the series
points lead with 624 points over Chris Hart with 603 points. John
Bender, Jason Jefferson and Kevin Hamlin round out the top five in the
rankings.
The next race on the Northwest Series schedule is this
Saturday, May 31st, at Yakima Speedway in Yakima,
WA.
NASCAR INTERNATIONAL TRUCK & ENGINE MIDWEST
SERIES
MORRIS, IL (May 25) -- Sycamore, Illinois' Ron Breese, Jr. captured
his first NASCAR Midwest Series race since July of 1998 winning the
All-Star 150 at Grundy County Speedway Sunday night. Breese came from
fifth position to win the 150-lap event and earn $3,520 in the
process.
Twenty-nine cars were vying to make the 26-car field.
Jon Lemke won the Bud Pole Award with his lap of 15.196 seconds around
the 1/3-mile track. The 150-lap race encountered five cautions for
just 24 circuits.
The exciting race ended after a late race caution
which set up a 10-lap dash to the finish and a battle between Breese
and second running Steve Carlson. Breese defended the inside position
successfully in capturing the win. Following Breese to the finish line
was 15th starting Carlson in second and 10th starting Jon Lemke in
third. Ryan Hanson and Eddie Hoffman rounded out the top five.
The race was attended by Hoosier Oval Track Asphalt
Product Manager Terry Newton who stated, "It was a very exciting
race."
Ron Breese, Jr. currently leads the NASCAR Midwest
Series standings with 505 points followed by Steve Carlson (488), Eric
Fransen (475), Tim Schendel (447) and Eddie Hoffman (441).
The next race on the series schedule is June 7th, at
Denver's Colorado National Speedway.
