LAKEVILLE,
IN (June 3) -- Three of the five NASCAR Touring Series' that Hoosier
provides tires for were in action over the weekend. On Friday, Jerry
Marquis made an exciting last-lap pass to capture his first win of the
season at Stafford Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified
Series. While on Saturday in the NASCAR Raybestos Northwest Series,
John Bender became the series' first repeat winner of the season
winning the Frank's Chevrolet 125 at Yakima Speedway. Finally, in the
NASCAR Southeast Series, Jeff Fultz won the 150-lap race at South
Boston Speedway.
NASCAR FEATHERLITE MODIFIED SERIES
STAFFORD SPRINGS, CT (May 30) -- Jerry Marquis led just one of the
150 race laps in the Haynes Connecticut Classic Friday night at
Stafford Motor Speedway's 1/2-mile oval, but it was the one that was
followed by the checkered flag. Marquis made a last-lap pass of Todd
Szegedy en route to picking up the win and collecting $6,300. Marquis,
who had started tenth, was followed by Szegedy and Eddie Flemke in
second and third.
Thirty-one cars started the 150-lap affair with seven
drivers finishing on the lead lap. Rounding out the list of lead-lap
finishers were 25th starting Teddy Christopher in fourth, Donny Lia
fifth, Tommy Bolles sixth and Jamie Tomaino in seventh.
It was Jerry Marquis' 13th career win in the series.
Todd Szegedy led 107 of the race's 150 laps but settled for a
runner-up finish when Marquis made the final-lap pass for the win in
front of a cheering crowd.
Todd Szegedy currently leads the NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series with 801 points followed by Jerry Marquis (771), John
Blewett, III, (766), Ted Christopher (757) and Chuck Hossfeld
(738).
The next stop on the series schedule is this Saturday
at New York's Riverhead Raceway for the 6th race on the series'
19-race schedule.
NASCAR RAYBESTOS NORTHWEST SERIES
YAKIMA, WA (May 31) -- John Bender became the Northwest Series
first repeat winner of the season capturing the Frank's Chevrolet 125
at Washington's Yakima Speedway. Bender started fifth and methodically
worked his way to the front on lap 87, en route to the win over Bruce
Wilbur--the event's only other race leader.
Twenty-eight cars started the race with Jason
Jefferson claiming the Bud Pole Award on the 1/2-mile track with a lap
of 19.237 seconds (93.134 mph). With the win, Bender collected $2,500.
Finishing in second place was pole-sitter Bruce Wilbur who pocketed
$1,700. Chris Hart rounded out the top three earning $1,600. Jason
Jefferson, who finished fourth after starting eighth, won the
rookie-of-the-race award.
With the win, John Bender (774) leaps from third to
first in the points standings over Chris Hart (768), Jeff Jefferson
(748), Jason Jefferson (741) and Joe Benedetti (694).
The series will take a week off before returning to
action on June 14th at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls,
Idaho.
NASCAR KODAK SOUTHEAST SERIES
SOUTH BOSTON, VA (May 31) -- After over a month of not racing, the
NASCAR Southeast Series was back in action to complete their second
race on their 10-race schedule. The series was in action at South
Boston's 4/10-mile track on Sunday with 25 cars taking the green flag.
Jeff Fultz led the first 14 laps, before giving way to
Billy Bigley Jr. Bigley who controlled the majority of the race
leading until lap 144. That is when Fultz regained the lead and
defended it until the checkered flag dropped on lap 150.
Fultz, who earned $4,640 for the win, was followed to
the finish line by Billy Bigley Jr., Jason Hogan, Jarod Robie and John
Wilkinson III.
With the win, Fultz takes over the series points lead
with 330 points over previous race winner Steven Howard. Howard
finished the race in 12th place.
The series is back in action this weekend, June 6th,
at Nashville Superspeedway USA.
