IN -- In NASCAR Touring action over the weekend, there was a
first-time winner, a 27-time winner, and a driver hitting
the half-century mark in wins. In the NASCAR Southeast Series, rookie
J.R. Norris posted his first series win capturing the "Bob Harmon
Memorial" Sunbelt Rentals 150, at Nashville Superspeedway on
Friday night. In the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series, Tony
Hirschman won his second race of the year and the 27th of his career.
Hirschman won the "Lake Erie 150" at Lake Erie Speedway in
Pennsylvania on Saturday. Also on Saturday, veteran Garrett Evans
captured his 50th career win in the NASCAR Northwest Series. Evans led
twice during the 129-lap "Pepsi 125" race at Idaho's Magic
Valley Speedway--including the race's final 56 laps en route to
notching the milestone victory. All three NASCAR divisions compete
exclusively on Hoosier tires.
NASCAR SOUTHEAST SERIES
LEBANON, TN (June 11) -- Twenty-five drivers started the NASCAR
Southeast series race at Nashville Superspeedway Friday evening. Ray
Skillman was the Bud Pole Award winner. He and rookie J.R. Norris
started the race on the front row. The race was led initially by
Skillman through lap 26, before the veteran gave way to previous race
winner Jeff Fultz. Fultz led through lap 65, before J.R. Norris made
the pass for the lead. Norris led the final 35 laps to capture his
first career win. The Mulga, AL driver pocketed $10,667 for his
night's work.
Norris was followed to the line by Ray Skillman, Erik
Darnell, Kevin Prince and 15th starting Greg Pope. Wayne Bowen
finished in sixth place--the first car one lap down. The race was
slowed by three caution flags for a total of 18 laps. It was also the
first time this season the series used Hoosier 2053 (left side) and
2170 (right side) tires designed for larger tracks.
With five races complete, Jason Hogan remains atop the
NASCAR Southeast Series standings with 810 points. Hogan, who finished
11th in Friday's race, is 36 points ahead of Erik Darnell in the
driver rankings. Hogan has already earned over $18,000 this season.
Jeff Fultz is in third place with 761 points followed by J.R. Norris
(759) in fourth place.
The NASCAR Southwest Series will be back in action
this Friday, June 18th, at Kentucky Speedway.
NASCAR FEATHERLITE MODIFIED SERIES
NORTH EAST, PA (June 12) -- After not having a repeat winner in the
NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series in its first five races of the
year, Tony Hirschman became the series' second repeat winner of the
season winning at Lake Erie Speedway on Saturday. Thirty-three cars
attempted to make the field for the "Lake Eire 150" with 30
drivers taking the green flag.
Eddie Flemke was the Bud Pole Award winner with a
14.170 second lap (95.272 mph) around the 3/8-mile oval. The top ten qualifiers then drew for their starting positions with Rob Summers
selecting the pole. Rob is the son of Hoosier Tire East owners Bobby
and Connie Summers. Hoosier Tire East services all NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series events.
The race began with Summers immediately jumping into
the lead which lasted 13 laps, before Tony Hirschman moved to
the top spot after starting alongside Summers in the front row.
Hirschman led the rest of the 150-lap race distance to record his
second win of the season. (Hirschman won earlier in the season at
Stafford Motor Speedway.) The Northhampton, PA driver collected $6,500
for the win. Last year's race winner and defending series champion
Todd Szegedy finished in second place followed by 13th starting Jerry
Marquis.
Rick Fuller finished in fourth place followed by Eddie
Flemke Jr., Rob Summers, Nevin George, Tom Bolles, Chuck Hossfeld and
Zach Sylvester in fifth through tenth, respectively.
Eddie Flemke currently leads the driver standings
after seven events with 1115 points followed closely by Tony Hirschman
with 1088 points. Jerry Marquis, the series' only other repeat winner,
is in third place with 1066 points. Teddy Christopher (1020) and Todd
Szegedy (926) round out the top five in the rankings.
Hoosier Open Wheel Asphalt Product Manager Irish
Saunders attended the event and came away extremely impressed with the
Lake Erie Speedway facility and management.
The NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series will next
compete at Wall Township (NJ) Speedway on June 26th.
