IRWINDALE, CA (July 28) -- Austin Cameron became the first driver to
win three races this season in the NASCAR Winston West Series after
capturing the JaniKing 200 at Irwindale Speedway on Sunday. The
200-lap race had eight lead changes among six different drivers and
had just two caution periods for 20 laps.
Austin Cameron led the 21-car field to the starting line after
capturing the Bud Pole Award after posting a 94.817 mph qualifying lap
on the 1/2-mile oval. The race came down to Cameron and Eric Norris,
the series points leader, battling it out at the finish.
After pitting for fresh Hoosiers, Norris began to close on Cameron
who was in the lead on worn tires. Cameron was able to hold off the
hard-charging Norris and capture his third win of the season and
collect the $12,766 top prize. The margin of victory was a slim .347
seconds. Cameron commented after the win, "We went on left side
tires 200 laps and that thing was on the ragged edge at the very end.
We beat (Eric) Norris who had four brand new ones with 10 to go. I
gave it everything I had." Finishing in second was Eric Norris
in the JaniKing Ford. Norris earned $6,878 for his runner-up finish.
Kevin Richards took third followed by Greg Pursley in fourth and
Johnny Borneman in fifth completing the list of lead-lap finishers. Eric
Norris continues to lead the Winston West Series point standings with
1009 markers to Austin Cameron's 967 points. Kevin Richards is in
third place with 931 points.
The NASCAR Winston West Series will next race on August 17th at
California's Stockton Speedway.
