LAKEVILLE,
IN -- While four of the five NASCAR divisions that Hoosier exclusively
provides tires for were to have been in action this past week, only two races
were completed with rain causing two other races to be rescheduled. On
Tuesday, August 5th, Steve Carlson (right) led the final 22 laps en
route to winning the 300-lap NASCAR International Truck and Engine
Corporation Midwest Series "Oneida Bingo and Casino 300" at Wisconsin
International Raceway. In the NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Northwest
Series, Wes Rhodes wasn't the first to cross the finish line, but when
Kevin Hamlin was penalized by NASCAR for contact with Brandon Riehl on
the final lap in the "Coors Lite 125" at Montana's Raceway Park,
Rhodes was awarded his first career win in the series. For the third
time this season a NASCAR Kodak Southeast Series race was washed out.
This time it was at Greenville, SC where rain fell on Greenville
Pickens Speedway causing the "Flexcheck Cash Advance 150" to be
postponed. The race has been rescheduled for September 20. The series
has completed seven races, while having three race dates affected by
rain as the series heads into its final three events of the season.
Finally, in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series, rain stopped the
"ASB American Classic 150" at Stafford Motor Speedway after 61 laps.
NASCAR has rescheduled the completion of the race for August 19th. Eddie Flemke
was in the lead when the race was suspended.
NASCAR INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AND ENGINE CORPORATION
KAUKAUNA, WI (August 5) -- Twenty-nine cars started the Oneida Bingo
and Casino 300, at Wisconsin International Raceway on Tuesday evening.
Steve Carlson won the Bud Pole Award after circling the track in
19.725 seconds for an average speed of 91.255 mph. Carlson started
eighth however, per series rules with Kirby Kurth and Eddie Hoffman on the
front row.
The race featured five lead changes among five
drivers. The five lap leaders were; Eddie Hoffman (1-89), Tim Sauter
(90-114), Brian Hoppe (115-123), Jeremy Lepak (124-136), Eddie Hoffman
(137-278), and Steve Carlson (279-300). The race had 16 cautions for
99 laps while taking 2 hours 29 minutes and 56 seconds to
complete.
Steve Carlson, who collected $8,075 for the win, was
followed to the finish line by Nathan Haseleu, Tim
Schendel, Brian Hoppe and Ron Breese, Jr. to round out the list of top
five finishers. Eight of the 29 starters finished the race on the lead
lap including Jeff Way (6th), Ryan Hanson (7th), and Eric Fransen
(8th).
The series has just two races remaining on its 2003
schedule heading into the September 14th race at Wisconsin Dells Motor
Speedway. With the win, Steve Carlson (1628) takes over the lead in
the driver standings over Eddie Hoffman (1594). Both drivers have won
three races each this year in the series with each pocketing over
$30,000 in winnings.
NASCAR RAYBESTOS BRAKES NORTHWEST SERIES
KALISPELL, MT (August 9) -- Twenty-four cars started the Coors Lite
125, at Raceway Park on Saturday. Before it was all over, a winner would be
declared--just not the driver who crossed the finish line first.
Kevin
Hamlin won the Bud Pole Award as the fastest qualifier when he circled
the 1/4-mile track in 12.975 seconds. He was the only driver to eclipse
the 12-second barrier in qualifying.
Amazingly, a late race caution sent the event into a
green-white-checkered finish for the fourth time in ten races this
season. The exciting finish had Kevin Hamlin and Brandon Riehl
battling it out on the final lap to determine a winner. On the final
lap, Hamlin was leading entering the first turn with Riehl applying
heavy pressure. Riehl went low making contact with Hamlin allowing the
rookie to momentarily take over the race lead. As the two entered turn three,
Hamlin then made contact with Riehl who was looking for his first career
win in the series. The contact sent the Riehl spinning through the
fourth turn while Hamlin crossed the finish line first followed by Wes
Rhodes. But after further review, NASCAR elected to assess a time
penalty on Hamlin for the contact relegating him to an eight place
finish and handing Wes Rhodes his first career win in the series.
Rhodes pocketed $2,500 for the controversial win.
Previous race winner Chris Hart finished in second
place followed by Ed Watson, Jason Jefferson and Rick Suran. Rounding
out the list of lead-lap finishers were John Bender, Brandon Riehl,
Kevin Hamlin and Jeff Jefferson in sixth through ninth place,
respectively.
Chris Hart continues to lead in the season-long driver standings with 1638 points over Jason Jefferson who has 1536
points. Hart will take his 102 point lead into Kent, WA where the
series will next race on August 24th. Just four races remain on the
Northwest Series schedule.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. is proud to partner with
NASCAR to exclusively provide tires for the series' mentioned in this
report.
