However, the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series race at Thompson International Speedway was postponed Thursday after an accident sadly claimed the life of Tom Baldwin, Sr. The race was rescheduled for August 29th. In the NASCAR Southwest Series, Jim Pettit II won the United Power/Touchstone Energy 150 at Colorado National Speedway on Saturday. It was Pettit's third win of the season. While in the NASCAR Midwest Series, Brian Hoppe (photo) claimed his first win of the season at Brainerd International Raceway's road course winning the Cellular One 300 on Sunday.

NASCAR SOUTHWEST SERIES
ERIE, CO (August 21) -- Twenty-six cars of the 29 cars on hand started the United Power/Touchstone Energy 150 at Colorado National Speedway on Saturday. Eric Holmes was the Bud Pole Award winner circling the 3/8-mile oval in 15.358 seconds (82.528 mph).

The race featured four different leaders including; Mike Mendenhall (1-2), Mike Gallegos (3-33, 35-66), Craig Raudman (34), and Jim Pettit II (67-150). The race was slowed five times for cautions totaling 22 laps.

Jim Pettit II, after starting ninth, took the win .103 seconds ahead of David Gilliland. Eddy  McKean finished in third place after starting 15th. Kevin Clark and Eric Holmes rounded out the top five. Pettit earned $5,526 for the win.

With the win, Jim Pettit II (1771) now takes over the points lead in the driver rankings over Craig Raudman (1546) who finished 12th in Saturday's race.

The series has four dates remaining on its 2004 schedule. Next up, a 150-lap race at Arizona's Tucson Raceway Park on September 18th.

(Photo courtesy of Brian's website www.51Racing.com) BRAINERD, MN (August 22) -- It had been three years since the NASCAR Midwest Series had competed on a road course. On Sunday, the series was at Brainerd International Raceway road course with 24 cars on hand. Joey Miller won the Bud Pole Fast Qualifier Award--yes, the same Joey Miller that won the ARCA RE/MAX race at Nashville eight days earlier.

The race had three different leaders who swapped the lead eight times. Miller led the race's first 19 circuits before fellow front row starter Stan Silva, Jr. took his lone turn out front. Silva led through lap 38, before Miller returned to the race lead. Miller led the next five laps before 17th starting Brian Hoppe fought his way to the front. From there, Hoppe and Miller swapped the lead back and forth several times before Hoppe passed the 19-year-old driver for good on lap 56 of the 61-lap race.

Hoppe collected $10,005 for the win--his first of the year after nabbing two wins in 2003. Joey Miller settled for a runner-up finish and $6,405. The Lakeville, MN driver was followed by Stan Silva, Jr., Justin Diercks and Ryan Hansen. Other race notes: Bobby Archer finished seventh after stating 19th. The race had six caution periods for 15 laps.

Just two events remain on the 2004 NASCAR Midwest Series schedule with Justin Diercks atop the driver standings with 1895 points followed by Steve Carlson with 1828 points. (Carlson finished ninth in Sunday's race.)

The NASCAR Midwest Series returns to action September 4th at Michigan's Kalamazoo Speedway.
