THOMPSON,
CT (August 29) -- Tony Hirschman came from tenth place to win the
NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series (NFMS) Bud Racing 150, at Thompson
International Speedway on Sunday becoming the first three-race winner
this season in the series. The Northampton, PA driver, who led the
race's final 70 laps, was followed to the finish line by Eddie Flemke.
The pair are currently first and second in the current driver
standings in which Hirschman now leads Flemke by 19 points.
Interestingly, Tony Hirschman won two of the four races contested at
Thompson International Speedway last season. Hoosier Racing Tire Corp.
is the exclusive tire provider to the NASCAR Featherlite Modified
Series. Of the five NASCAR regional racing series that run exclusively
on Hoosiers only the NFMS was in action this weekend.
Forty five cars attempted to qualify for the 33-car
grid in Sunday's Bud Racing 150. Sean Caisse won his first-career Bud
Pole Award as the event's fastest qualifier. The 150-lap race was
resumed with 10 laps having been logged earlier on the 19th of the
month before the race was postponed. A late-race caution extended the
race an additional two laps to accommodate a green-white-checker
finish.
Race leaders included; Bobby Santos III (1, 7), Sean
Caisse (2-6), Ted Christopher (8-40), Donny Lia (41-81), Ken Bouchard
(82), Tony Hirschman (83-152). The race was slowed six times for a
total of 27 laps with 12 of the 33 starters finishing the race on the
lead lap.
For Hirschman, it was his third win of the season and
was worth $5,000. Following him to the finish line was Eddie Flemke
who had started ninth. Jimmy Kuhn, Jr. finished in third place after
starting back in 25th with Ted Christopher and Rick Fuller rounding
out the top five.
Five races remain on the 2004 NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series schedule including two more stops at Thompson. Next,
however, is another stop at Waterford, CT where the number two man in
the points chase, Eddie Flemke, was the race winner. The race is
scheduled for September 4th at Waterford Speedbowl.
