IN -- Three of the five NASCAR divisions which Hoosier exclusively
provides tires for were in action over the Labor Day weekend. In the
NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series, Chuck Hossfeld won his third race
of the season and closed to within 125 points of first place in the
series standings behind Todd Szegedy with five races remaining on the
2003 schedule. Hossfeld won "The Big Y World Class Market
150" on Saturday at Connecticut's Waterford Speedbowl. While in
the NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series, Jeff Jefferson also
picked up his third win of the season capturing the "Ranch &
Home 125" at Washington's Tri-City Raceway on Sunday. Jefferson
also finds himself in second place in the standings just 26 points
behind Chris Hart with just two races remaining. In the NASCAR
Featherlite Southwest Series, David Gilliland won his fourth race of
the season winning the "Advantage Ford 125" at Irwindale
Speedway on Saturday. Gilliland is in fourth place in the
standings--192 points behind Auggie Vidovich, Jr. heading into the
final four races of the season.
NASCAR FEATHERLITE MODIFIED SERIES
WATERFORD, CT (August 30) -- Thirty cars started Saturday's "The
Big Y World Class Market 150" on Saturday at Connecticut's
Waterford Speedbowl. Eric Beers won the Bud Pole Award as the fastest
qualifier on the 3/8-mile oval and drew the #3 starting position while
Chuck Hossfeld drew the pole.
With the luck of the draw on his side, Hossfeld led
from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag fell on lap
150 to pocket $4,800 for the win. Following Hossfeld to the stripe was
outside pole-sitter, and current points leader, Todd Szegedy. Szegedy
earned $3,800 for the runner-up spot. Eighth starting Donny Lia finished
in third place and collected $2,600.
Amazingly, 16 of the 30 starters finished the race on
the lead lap. Todd Szegedy currently leads the NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series standings with 2249 points followed by Chuck Hossfeld
with 2124 points. John Blewett, III is in third place in the rankings
with 2122 points, while Teddy Christopher and Jerry Marquis round out
the top five in the standings.
The series will race again this weekend, September 7,
at Thompson International Speedway in Connecticut. The series now has
five races remaining on its 19-race schedule.
NASCAR RAYBESTOS BRAKES NORTHWEST SERIES
WEST RICHLAND, WA (August 31) -- Twenty-one cars took the green
flag at Tri-City Raceway in the NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Northwest
Series on Sunday. When it was all over, Jeff Jefferson had moved from
seventh to first to take the win and pocket $2,400 for his
effort.
Impressively, 12 of the 21 starters managed to finish
the race on the lead lap in the 125-lap race that had just five
cautions for 12 laps. Following Jeff Jefferson to the line was his
brother Jason--just .097 seconds behind. Rounding out the final podium
spot was ninth starting Kevin Hamlin with Gary Lewis and John Dillon
finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Despite a 15th place finish, Chris Hart continues to
stand atop the rankings with 1902 points followed closely by Jeff
Jefferson with 1876 points. Jason Jefferson is in third place with
1856 points heading into the final two events of the season.
The NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series will next
race at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, Idaho on September 13th,
before completing their season on September 27th at Wenatchee Valley's
Super Oval in Wenatchee, WA.
NASCAR FEATHERLITE SOUTHWEST SERIES
IRWINDALE, CA (August 30) --David Gilliland came from fifth in the
30-car starting field to capture his fourth race of the season winning
the "Advantage Ford 125" at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday.
Kevin Vernon, Eric Holmes, Eddy McKean, Auggie Vidovich, Jr., Nick
Joanides and Steve Bolletto completed the list of lead-lap finishers
in the 150-lap race finishing second through seventh, respectively.
Gilliland collected $4,400 for the win, while Vernon
earned $3,125 for the runner-up spot. After 10 events, it was
Gilliland's 4th win of the season. Despite being the series only
repeat winner this season, Gilliland still finds himself in 4th place
in the standings--192 points out of first place. Auggie Vidovich, Jr.
is in first place in the standings with 1521 points followed by Jim
Pettit, II (1449) and Eric Holmes (1415).
The NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series competitors
will next travel to Arizona's Tucson Raceway Park for another 150-lap
race on September 20th.
