IN -- Just one of the five NASCAR divisions that Hoosier exclusively
provides tires for was in action over the weekend. In the NASCAR
Featherlite Modified Series, Tony Hirschman led twice including the
final 28 laps in winning the "Sunoco Thompson 300" at
Thompson International Speedway on Sunday. It was Hirschman's first
win in over two years and 24th of his career in the series.
The exciting race had 11 lead changes among eight
different drivers before it was all over. Drivers leading during the
event were; Mike Stefanik (1-7), Todd Szegedy (8-22), Stefanik
(23-73), Szegedy (74-75), Teddy Christopher (76-99), Tony Hirschman
(100-108), Donny Lia (109-130), Jerry Marquis (131-173), Eddie Flemke
(174-213), Doug Coby (214-250), Lia (251-259), Marquis (260-272) and
Hirschman (273-300). Forty cars started the race that had 15 cautions
for a total of 90 laps.
Hirschman, who started on the outside-pole, collected
$13,700 for the win, while sixth starting Jerry Marquis earned $8,000
for the runner-up spot. Jeff Fuller rounded out the top three after
starting 11th in the field. Fuller pocketed $5,200 for the final
podium spot.
Eleven drivers finished the race on the lead lap
including; Rick Fuller in fourth, Tom Bolles, Tom Baldwin, Jamie
Tomaino, Doug Colby, Tommy Cloce, Jimmy Broderick and Bob Polverari in
5th through 11th, respectively.
Four races remain on the 2003 NASCAR Featherlite
Modified Series schedule with Todd Szegedy atop the driver standings
with 2316 points. Szegedy finished Sunday's race in 32nd. Chuck
Hossfeld is in second place with 2218 points. Hossfeld also had a
tough day finishing in 23rd, while John Blewett, III is in third place
with 2198 points. Blewett finished Sunday's race in 29th.
Next up on the series schedule is a stop at New
Hampshire International Speedway on September 12th.
