THOMPSON,
CT (September 8) -- Defending NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series
champion Mike Stefanik won his first race of the season Sunday winning
the Thompson Sunoco 300 at Thompson International Speedway. Stefanik
broke a 19-race drought in which the series win-leader went winless.
That is until Charlie Pasteryak ran out of gas with seven to go which
put the tenth starting Stefanik out front for good. Despite the
drought, the Coventry, RI driver is just 69 points out of first place
in the series standings. Currently, Stefanik is in third in the
standings behind Eddie Flemke and Jerry Marquis who are first and
second, respectively.
A forty-car field took the green flag on Sunday on the
5/8-mile high banks of Thompson International Speedway. Tony Hirschman
and rookie Todd Szegedy comprised the front row for the 300-lap
event.
The exciting race featured 12 lead changes among six
different drivers. The six lap leaders were: Todd Szegedy (1-16), Tony
Ferrante (17-40), Ted Christopher (41-88, 110, 112-113, 211), Mike
Stefanik (89-109, 111, 114-138, 212-252, 294-300), L.W Miller
(139-210), Charlie Pasteryak (253-293).
The race had 18 caution periods for a total of 99
laps, or nearly one-third of the race laps.
Stefanik took home $16,400 for the win, while fourth
starting Tony Ferrante finished a career-best second and pocketed
$8,405. Rounding out the top three was 14th starting L.W. Miller.
Miller collected $6,405 for the final podium spot.

Blewett, III in fourth, Jamie Tomaino in fifth after starting 32nd,
and 16th starting Bob Polverari coming home in sixth.
Eddie Flemke finished in 22nd but retained the NASCAR
Featherlite Modified Series lead with 2125 points over Jerry Marquis
(2088) who finished 27th. Stefanik is in third with 2056 as the top
five in the standings are now separated by less than 100 points. Rick
Fuller (2034) and rookie Todd Szegedy (2028) round out the top five.
The series resumes racing this Saturday, September
