LAS
VEGAS, NV (October 23-26) -- Hoosier-shod drivers in the NHRA Series
continue to be the talk of the pits as seven drivers made it all the
way to the final round in the 3rd annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA
Nationals over the weekend. This despite the absence of the two
alcohol classes in which Hoosier normally dominates. In the Pro Mod
class, Thomas Patterson was shooting not only for the win, but for the
season title as well. In Stock, it was Jody Lang was looking to join
his brother Toby as a National event winner in the class, while in
Super Comp, it was Ed Cooper and Jerry Denton, Jr. meeting
head-to-head in the finals. Don Narten, Jr. represented Team-Hoosier
in the Super Gas final round. In the second all-Hoosier final it was
Gerry Epp against Steve Cox in the Super Street final.
PRO MOD
Despite running his quickest run of the event, Thomas Patterson had to
settle for runner-up honors in the Pro Mod class. Patterson, driving
the PMS Excavation '41 Willys, had a 6.315 ET (222.25 mph) but it
wasn't quite good enough to take the win. Even more disappointing for
Patterson was that Fred Hahn won the Pro Mod season title in the class
as a result of Patterson's runner-up finish.
STOCK
Jody Lang won the Stock final when his opponent left the line early.
The red light infraction handed the win to Lang for his first National
event win of the season. Jody's brother Toby also has two National
wins this season in the class on Hoosier tires.
SUPER COMP
The only question that remained in the Super Comp final was which
Team-Hoosier driver would capture the National event win. Would it be
Ed Cooper or Jerry Denton? This race was a close one with Cooper
winning the contest after Denton broke out by .006 of a second.
Cooper's numbers were a .012 RT and a 9.060 ET (9.05 index) for a .010
package. It was Cooper's second National event win of his career. His
last win came back in 1985.
SUPER GAS
Despite posting a near perfect run, Don Narten, Jr. settled for
runner-up honors in Super Gas when his opponent had a perfect run.
Narten's opponent ran a 10.07 ET (10.07 index) en route to his perfect
run.
SUPER STREET
In the second all-Hoosier final round of the weekend, Gerry Epp met
Steve Cox in the Super Street finals. Epp, from British
Columbia, won the race with a .056 RT and an 11.076 ET for a
-.014 package in a double breakout final round.
Congratulations to the seven members of Team-Hoosier
making it to their respective class finals and to all the drivers who
trusted USA-made Hoosier tires during the competition.
Hoosier Drag Racing Product Manager Steve Hudspeth was
in Las Vegas for the event and reported the details for this report.
Steve will also be traveling to California, Nov 6-9, for the final
NHRA Series event of the season.
