JOLIET,
IL (September 26-29) -- Once again Hoosier had a strong performance in
NHRA competition over the weekend with eight drivers making it to the
final round in six of the eight classes Hoosier competes in. The 2nd
annual Craftsman 75th Anniversary NHRA Nationals held at Route 66
Raceway was the latest event on the NHRA schedule. Those making it to
their respective class finals using Hoosier tires were, Steve Federlin
and Ken Perry in Top Alcohol Dragster, Jay Payne and Von Smith in Top
Alcohol Funny Car, Keith Lynch in Stock, Shane Carr in Super Comp,
Gale Wallace in Super Gas, Dustin Richardson in Super Street.
TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
Both alcohol classes had "all-Hoosier" finals, so a
Hoosier-shod winner was a sure bet. In T/A Dragster, Steve Federlin
met Ken Perry in the finals. This one was over early when Perry
red-lighted handing Federlin his second national event win of the
season. Both drivers made it to the final round using a pair of
Hoosier 34.5/17.0-16 C4000 drag tires.
This was the quickest T/A Dragster field in NHRA
history with a "bump-spot" of 5.464 seconds.
TOP ALCOHOL FUNNY CAR
In the second Hoosier vs. Hoosier final, #1 qualifier, Von Smith, met
#2 qualifier, Jay Payne, in
the T/A Funny Car final. A speed of 88 mph rarely gets a win in a
class that regularly exceeds 250 mph, but that's just what happened in
this final. Both drivers encountered mechanical problems, but Payne
was able to coast across the finish line for the win. The national
event win was Payne's 23rd in alcohol classes.
It was a pretty good weekend for Jay Payne. He also
won the All Stars special event for Sportsman classes over the weekend
in which the top eight point earners from each of NHRA's seven
geographic divisions compete for $100,000 in prizes.
SUPER STREET
Dustin Richardson won Super Street using a pair of Hoosier
32.0/14.0-15 D05 drag tires. Richardson, an 18-year-old high school
student from Woodburn, IN, was a winner on Friday night on the
football field and capped off his weekend Sunday winning the Super
Street class. Richardson had the better light and held on for the
win--his first-ever national event win.
Congratulations also go out to Keith Lynch, Shane Carr
and Gale Wallace for capturing runner-up honors in their respective
classes on Hoosier tires.
