And while it is a new season of drag racing, one thing remained the same: Hoosier-shod drivers were making their presence known. Six drivers using USA-made Hoosier tires made it into the final round of their respective classes. Those drivers making it to the class finals were: Steve Federlin and Mark Hentges in Top Alcohol Dragster, Pat Austin and Bucky Austin in the Top Alcohol Funny Car, Mike Ferderer in Super Comp and Todd Stewart in Super Gas.

In the Top Alcohol Dragster final, Steve Federlin met Mark Hentges. Federlin got the early advantage at the light when he posted a .430 RT to Hentges' .457 RT. Federlin's hole shot was enough to overcome the slight edge Hentges held in ET. Federlin recorded a 5.444 ET (261.37 mph) to Hentges' 5.421 ET (262.23 mph), as Federlin crossed the stripe first and took the win by a scant .0047 seconds.

The Top Alcohol Funny Car final would be a historic one and yet another in which both competitors used Hoosier rubber. This final pitted Pat Austin against his uncle, Bucky Austin. Pat Austin, in the IRC Performance Push Rods 2002 Firebird, got the jump at the starting line, posting a .449 RT to Bucky's .518 RT. But Bucky would run into problems while Pat went on to the win with a 5.780 ET and a speed of 253.66 mph. The win was an amazing milestone for Austin who recorded his 75th national event victory.

Mike Ferderer after winning the Super Comp trophySUPER COMP
In the Super Comp final, the odds of a Team-Hoosier winner were not as good as the previous two finals had been. But with the combination of Mike Ferderer and Hoosier tires, the odds were good that another Hoosier-clad winner was just a few seconds away.

Ferderer used a .407 RT over his competition's .416 RT to get the early jump at the light. Both drivers had nearly identical ET's with only .001 of a second separating the two at the line. But it was Ferderer with an 8.912 ET on the 8.90 dial taking the win by approximately 2 feet and giving Team-Hoosier its third class win of the weekend.

SUPER GAS
Todd Stewart took runner-up honors after breaking-out against his opponent in the Super Gas finals of the 42nd annual K&N Filters NHRA Winternationals.

Both Hoosier Drag Racing Product Managers Steve Hudspeth and Faron Lubbers were in Pomona to evaluate the early season performance of the many Hoosier tires used in the NHRA season opener.

Lubbers commented after the weekend, "It was a great opening event for Team-Hoosier, six drivers in four class finals with three class victories. Not a bad way to start the season!"

Next up for the NHRA series is the 18th annual Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals, February 21-24, in Phoenix, Arizona.
