LAS
VEGAS, NV (April 8) -- The 2nd annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals
was the most recent stop where Hoosier tires had an opportunity to
display their strength in the Sportsman divisions. Following up on a
strong performance in Texas, Hoosier again looked to dominate the
action at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Dominate
they did. Hoosier equipped cars powered their way into five of the
seven Sportsman finals. When all the smoke cleared, Hoosier drivers
took home another four trophies in the seven Sportsman classes.
Federal Mogul Funny Car
In the Federal Mogul Funny Car division 15 of 16 cars qualified on
Hoosier tires. And as you would expect, it was an all-Hoosier final,
as Bucky Austin and Larry Miner squared off. Overcoming a slower RT,
Austin rocketed past Miner to take his 2nd win of the season. Austin's
ET was 5.789 compared to Miner's 5.833. (Bucky Austin also won at
Pomona earlier in the season.)
Stock
It was the same story in the Stock division, an all-Hoosier final.
The finals saw Neil Smedley and Jeff Hefler go head to head to decide
who would be tops in the class. Smedley used a .522 reaction time to
Hefler's .552, to take the win by a mere two thousandths of a second.
Sadly, for the second year in a row in Las Vegas, Hefler had to settle
for the runner-up spot.
Super Comp
Hoosier-shod Frank Kohutek met Dick VanderMeer in the Super Comp
finals. Kohutek used a .421 RT and an ET of 9.037, to VanderMeer's
.439 RT with a 9.034 ET, to take the win. The victory keeps Hoosier
undefeated in National event finals for the year. Kohutek has now won
his 2nd National event in a row after winning the Super Gas division
at the O'Reilly Nationals in Houston.
Super Gas
For a third time on the day, it was again an all-Hoosier final.
This time, it was in the Super Gas category. Marty Jacobs met Dean
Hall to determine the winner. Hall red lighted by a mere .001 seconds
which resulted in victory for Jacobs.
Additional Notes
Mark Hentges, in the Federal Mogul Dragster division running
Hoosier tires, was well on his way to victory when his ride blew a
burst panel half way down the track. The result was a runner-up finish
to Brandon Bernstein.
Hoosier would like to congratulate all competitors who trusted the
Hoosier brand during this past weekend's competition.
