COMMERCE,
GA (May 1-4) -- It was another historic weekend for Team-Hoosier in
the NHRA Series. This time, it was at the NHRA Southern Nationals in
Georgia with five Hoosier-shod drivers battling into their respective
class finals. After it was all over, four drivers using Hoosier drag
tires captured national event wins. The Atlanta event also was the
setting for Frank Manzo setting a new speed record in Top Alcohol
Funny Car at 260.55 mph en route to his 52nd national event win. The
event also featured Comp Eliminator driver David Rampy capturing his
3rd national event win (fourth overall) in 2003 using Hoosier's new
33.0/12.0-15 C10 drag tire. Rampy now has four overall wins and a
national runner-up finish this year using the dynamic new tire. Other
Hoosier-shod drivers in the final round were Marty Thacker in Top
Alcohol Dragster, Shane Carr in Super Comp and Quentin Holloway in
Super Street.
TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
In T/A Dragster, Marty Thacker in his first final round appearance,
got off the line quickly with a .024 RT to his opponent's .089 RT to
gain an early advantage. Thacker, and his Hoosier 34.5/17.0-16 C4000
drag tires, then powered onto the win with a 5.454 ET (262.44 mph).
The win was the Hoosier brand's third national event win in five
events contested to date this season.
TOP ALCOHOL FUNNY CAR
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Team-Hoosier was also looking for their
third national event win of the season. Whether they would get that
win rested on the broad shoulders of Frank Manzo in the Kendall GT-1
Firebird. But it would not be easy with his opponent on a roll this
season having won two of the four previous national events. But Manzo
put any fears to rest quickly with a .050 RT and a 5.614 ET (257.24
mph). Manzo took the win--his 52nd national event win of his stellar
career. Manzo uses Hoosier's 34.5/17.0-16 C2000 drag tires and
established a new speed record earlier in the event with a run of
260.55 mph. In addition to the record run, Manzo also set low ET of
the event at 5.589 seconds.
COMP ELIMINATOR
Fresh off his win at Bristol less than a week earlier, David Rampy continued
dominance in the Comp Eliminator class by capturing yet another
national win bringing his total to three in the seven events contested
to date. Combined with a divisional win, Rampy now has four wins and a
national runner-up finish to his credit this season--all using
Hoosier's new 33.0/12.0-15 C10 drag tire. It was Rampy's 48th national
event win and came in front of many of his friends and family who had
made the relatively short trip from Piedmont, AL to witness first hand
the win.
SUPER COMP
Shane Carr took runner-up honors when he broke out by a scant .004
seconds in the final
SUPER STREET
In Super Street, a testimonial of sorts was made when Quentin
Holloway bolted a set of Hoosiers on for the first time. Holloway then
proceeded to battle round after round until he captured the national
event win using a pair of newly purchased Hoosier 33.0/15.0-15 D05's.
Welcome to Team-Hoosier Mr. Holloway!
John Adamo, Hoosier's NHRA Track Service Manager and
the Hoosier NHRA drag racing tractor/trailer, made a stop at the
Hoosier warehouse to restock before rejoining the series when it
returns to action May15-18, at Englishtown, NJ for the 34th Matco
Tools SuperNationals.
