HOOSIER TAKES FOUR NHRA WINS IN TOPEKA

Shelly Howard taking her 1st National event win on HoosiersTOPEKA, KS (May 27) -- It was another strong showing this past weekend by Hoosier-shod drivers in NHRA drag racing action as they collected four wins and three runner-up positions. The 13th annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals held in Topeka, Kansas at Heartland Park Topeka was the latest stop on the NHRA drag racing schedule. Those drivers taking home a "Wally" using USA-made Hoosier tires were: Shelly Howard, Jay Payne, Todd Heins and Curt Harshfield.    

FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER

Shelly Howard used a .463 RT and a 5.536 run to defeat her competition in the final round of the Federal-Mogul Dragster class. Her speed of 258.02 mph was nearly ten mph faster than the runner-up. The win was her 2nd National event win and her first on Hoosier tires. 

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Jay Payne in his 2001 Valvoline Chevy Camaro took the victory in the F/M Funny Car class. Payne used a .488 RT and a 5.763 second ET (248.11 mph) to defeat his competition in Sunday's final round action. The win was Payne's second National event win of the 2001 season. Payne also took the top prize at Gainesville in March. 

SUPER GAS

Todd Heins used a -.015 index to take the win in the Super Gas class. Heins had a RT of .428 seconds and an ET of 9.885 on a 9.90 index to take the win.

SUPER STREET

It was an "all-Hoosier" final in the Super Street class final as Curt Harshfield met William Percival. Both drivers had an index of 10.90 as Percival had an RT of .520 to Harshfield's .526. Harshfield's ET however was 10.903 to Percival's 10.833. Harshfield had a .003 index to Percival's -.067 to take the victory and the title of Advance Auto Parts Super Street Champion.

RUNNER-UP FINISHERS

While not emerging the ultimate winners in their respective classes, several other Hoosier-shod teams made it to the final round. Mike Trumble Jr. took runner-up in Super Stock class while Steve Echols was runner-up in Super Comp class, losing by approximately three feet at the line. 

Hoosier Racing Tire Product Manager Steve Hudspeth attended the event and commented, "Hoosier-shod teams had another great weekend at Topeka and we are excited about our chances at this week's NHRA National event in Illinois." 

Next up on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series schedule is a stop in Joliet, IL for the Lucas Oil Products NHRA Nationals May 31 thru June 3.
