CHILLICOTHE,
OH (June 21) -- Kentucky's Darrell Lanigan won his first Renegade
DirtCar Racing Series race of the season Saturday night leading every
lap of the 50-lap feature. Lanigan, along with 21 other drivers in the
feature, competed on Hoosier tires en route to collecting the $7,000
win at KC Raceway. The DirtCar Series began in 1983 and allows
competitors to run any tire brand.
A total of 48 cars were on hand battling it out for a
spot in the 25-car field in the "Summer Sizzler 50." Bart
Hartman set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 15.278 seconds
around the KC Raceway 3/8-mile clay oval. Chub Frank was second
fastest with a lap of 15.313 seconds, while Darrell Lanigan rounded
out the top three in qualifying with a lap of 15.335 seconds.
Hoosier-shod drivers captured three wins in the four
heat races contested. R.J. Conley, Barry Bragdon and Jerry Rice were
the three Team-Hoosier heat winners.
In the feature, 22 of the 25 starters opted to ride on
Hoosier tires. Darrell Lanigan took immediate command of the race from
the pole leading all 50 laps of the night's feature race. It was
Lanigan's first series win of the season and earned the Union, KY
driver $7,000. All told, Hoosier-shod drivers captured the first nine
spots in the feature.
Following Lanigan to the finish line was defending
series champion Chub Frank in second, Davey Johnson, R.J. Conley, Mike
Balzano, Jerry Rice, Barry Bragdon, Rob Blair and Bart Hartman. In
fact, Hoosier tires were on 15 of the first 16 drivers to cross the
finish line in the night's final race.
The race had four cautions and took 37 minutes to
complete. Davey Johnson, who finished third, won the Hard Charger of
the Race Award after starting 14th.
Chub Frank has been the series
champion the past three seasons--all on Hoosier tires. The Bear Lake,
PA native captured the point championship in 2002 after posting five
victories in the 32 main events that were contested. Amazingly, the
Renegade DirtCar Racing Series had 19 different main event winners
last season.
Currently, Chub Frank leads the series standings with
2,250 points as he continues to strive for his fourth consecutive
series championship. In second place is Mike Balzano with 2,190 points.
The entire top ten in the series standings all ride on Hoosier tires.
