DELLS, WI (May 27) -- Wisconsin's Brian Hoppe recorded his first
NASCAR RE/MAX Challenge Series victory of the season on Memorial Day
at Dells Motor Speedway. The 1999 series champion collected $5,400
after winning the Summer Sizzler 200. The victory places Hoppe third
in the series standings behind Eddie Hoffman and defending series
champion Steve Carlson.
The front row of the 24-car starting field consisted
of Eddie Hoffman on the pole and Brian Hoppe alongside. Hoffman used
his inside starting position on the .33-mile bull-ring to take the
race lead at the drop of the green flag with Hoppe settling into
second.
Hoppe knew he had a faster car but was willing to
follow Hoffman early on in the event. While applying constant pressure
to the race leader, Hoppe knew it was just a matter of when he wanted
to make his move for the lead. That occurred on lap 153, when Hoppe
moved into the race lead. Hoppe led the remainder of the way en route
to the $5,400 win with Hoffman settling for second place and $3,075.
Steve Carlson took third with Justin Diercks and Jeff
Kendall rounding out fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The race was slowed by just four caution periods for
26 laps due to minor accidents. Nine of the 24 starters finished on
the lead lap.
After three races, Eddie Hoffman stands atop the
NASCAR RE/MAX Challenge Series standings with 500 points followed by
Steve Carlson with 481 points and Brian Hope with 479 points.
The series next competes on Saturday, June 1, at
Colorado National Speedway in Denver, CO.
