CO (June 1) -- Defending NASCAR RE/MAX Challenge Series Champion Steve
Carlson picked up his first win of the 2002 season after capturing the
Auto Trader 150 at Colorado National Speedway on Saturday. Carlson,
who has won the series crown three out of the past four years, took
the lead on lap 32, and led the remainder of the way en route to the
150-lap win. Carlson earned $7,373 for the top finish.
Twenty-six cars started the event on the 3/8-mile
oval. Jon Lemke won the Bud Pole Award after circling the track in
16.143 seconds (83.628 mph).
Bruce Yackey started the race from the pole after the
inversion and led the race's first 31 laps. On lap 32, Steve Carlson,
who had started seventh, moved into the lead. Carlson led the
remainder of the way--winning by .605 seconds over tenth starting Jon
Lemke. Carlson collected $7,373 for the victory.
Lemke earned $4,348 for his runner-up finish. Rounding
out the top three was 12th starting Eddie Hoffman. Hoffman pocketed
$3,148 for the final podium spot.
Eight of the race's 26 starters finished on the lead
lap. Rounding out the list of lead-lap finishers were: Josh Vadnais,
fourth; Bruce Yackey, fifth; Brian Hoppe, sixth; Justin Diercks,
seventh; and Tim Schendel, eighth. Brian Hoppe charged from the 17th
starting position to claim his sixth place finish.
Eddie Hoffman is in first place in the series
standings with 665 points, followed closely by Steve Carlson with 661
points and Brian Hoppe with 629 points.
The NASCAR RE/MAX Challenge Series resumes action this
Friday at Wisconsin International Speedway.
