IN (April 18) -- Dennis Sherman, vice president of marketing at
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp., announced today that Knoxville-area
businessman Charlie Roberts has purchased the Hoosier Tire South Oval
Roberts took over the business on March 1, purchasing it from
longtime distributor Doug Sopha and is serving as president. David
Miller is serving as vice president of the company.
"We are very pleased to welcome Charlie and David into the
Hoosier Tire family,'' Sherman said. "We believe the increase in
staff, along with the knowledge of racing and the tire business, will
be beneficial to everyone.''
Roberts is a former owner of a large, off-the-road tire dealership,
with his main office located outside Knoxville. He sold the business
in 1995 and approached Sopha at that time about buying into his
business. They began talking three years later and finally finished
the deal in February.
Miller, 29, worked construction in the Barborville, Ky. area. In
addition, Jimmy (Pup) Thomas, who has been with Hoosier Tire South for
a number of years, will remain at the business.
"I have always loved racing and I have been following the Hav-A-Tampa
series for the last eight years,'' Roberts said. "I haven't been
that involved in NASCAR or asphalt racing, but I have traveled a lot to
watch Hav-A-Tampa from Missouri to Oklahoma or wherever they are
Roberts is also happy to be a part of Hoosier's strong distributor
"The folks at Hoosier have been tremendous to work with,''
Roberts said. "There hasn't been a single thing that I have asked
for that (Hoosier President) Bob Newton hasn't given me. I have been
very pleased with that part of it.''
