(August 12, 2005 Watkins Glen, NY) The Grand American Rolex Racers took the CompUSA 200 Green Flag Friday evening, and off to a great two hour sprint race it was. The weather was beautiful, after a 2:30 p.m., one hour, hard rain shower, which cooled things off for perfect racing conditions.
A field of 23 Daytona Prototypes (DP) and 22 Grand Touring (GT) cars started Friday evenings race. Once again the number 10, DP, Sun Trust Racing team, Pontiac Riley, driven by Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli sits atop the podium. Bringing home win number 4 for their team, in this very exciting Rolex season.
They did it with an average speed of 91.796 mph. On the exquisite Watkins Glen Short Course, which measures 2.45-miles, and has 11 very exciting turns on its hilly terrain. The team had a best lap time of 1:09.189 in lap number 62.
Coming in second in only their fourth race of the season, was the number 99, Gainsco / Blackhawk Racing team, with their Pontiac Riley, driven by Bob Stallings, and Alex Gurney. Coming in only .711 seconds behind the leaders. Alex Gurney said "Everything worked out right today. Our strategy to come from 21st to 2nd,
challenge was great. Everything worked out well. The car and the tires were awesome".
In third place for the DP cars was the number 66, Krohn Racing / TRG team, Pontiac Riley. Driven by Jorg Bergmeister and Christian Fittipaldi.
The GT class, Paul Edwards and Jan Magnussen in the No. 64 TRG Pontiac GTO.R claimed the first GT victory for the Pontiac with their class win in the CompUSA
200, starting in nineteenth position and moving to the front. Joey Hand and Justin Marks in the number 16 F1 Air BMW Team PTG M3
was second and John Littlechild and Spencer Pumpelly in the number 36 TPC Racing Porsche GT3 Cup
was third.
