LAKEVILLE,
IN -- The year-long battle in the USAC National Sprint Car Series
between defending series champion J.J. Yeley and Tracy Hines came to
an end in Terre Haute, IN on Saturday, October 5th, with Yeley taking the win and
Hines wearing the championship crown. The USAC Sprint Car Series
contested 32 races this season with the championship not determined
until the checkered flag fell on the season ending race. Ironically,
Yeley won seven times this year with Hines posting three wins. The
USAC Sprint Car Series competes on dirt and asphalt tracks which
requires both versatility and mastery for a driver to achieve a
championship. Not surprisingly, both Hines and Yeley had wins on dirt
and asphalt surfaces this season.
The year began with Tracy Hines capturing the first
two events of the season which gave the New Castle, IN driver the
points lead which he never relinquished throughout the season. The
USAC National Sprint Car Series championship was Hines' first in the
series and second overall. He also won the USAC Silver Crown title in
2002.
The final standings had Tracy Hines winning the title
by just 13 points over J.J. Yeley. Hines' point total was 1538 to
Yeley's 1525. Derek Davidson (1122), Jay Drake (1056), and Dave
Darland (980) rounded out the top five in the final standings.
The USAC National Sprint Car Series contested 29 races
this season with 18 races on dirt and 11 on pavement. When the series
competes on asphalt, Hoosier tires are the "spec tire". When
the series competes on dirt, any tire brand is allowed. Still, Hoosier
tires were on 12 of the 18 dirt track winners in 2002.
Hoosier Racing Tire Corp. congratulates all the
competitors in the USAC National Sprint Car Series who made the 2002
season so exciting, particularly Tracy Hines and J.J. Yeley for their
sportsmanship and professionalism throughout the season. We are proud
to include both drivers as members of
Team-Hoosier.
