NAZARETH,
PA (April 21) -- Rain was a major factor in the USAC Series stop at
Nazareth Speedway this past weekend. While the USAC Stoops
Freightliner Sprint Car Series and the USAC National Midget Car Series
were able to complete their scheduled races, the Weld Racing Silver
Crown Series was not. With Jason Leffler leading at lap 35, the rains
returned causing the 100-lap race to be stopped.
USAC STOOPS
FREIGHTLINER SPRINT CAR SERIES
With rain interrupting Saturday's qualifying, the starting grid
was set by 2002 point standings. With Tracy Hines winning the opening
race at Anderson, the pole position was his reward. Hines led all 25
laps in capturing his second win of the season. A.J. Fike, Jay Drake,
Derek Davidson and J.J. Yeley rounded out the top five. Hines'
win was a record for his team owner. It was the 52nd USAC Sprint Car
win for the Hoffman Auto Racing Team--owners of the
Kroger/Folgers/Pringles/Sunny Delight/Gaerte/Beast sprint car Hines
drove to the win. This surpassed the old record of 51 set by Steve
Stapp. Tracy Hines now leads the series points race with 125 markers
followed by A.J. Fike (120), Jay Drake (101), Derek Davidson (100),
and J.J. Yeley (90) in second through fifth, respectively. The next
stop for the USAC Sprint Car Series is Eldora Speedway on April 27. USAC
NATIONAL MIDGET CAR SERIES
Michael Lewis won the 25-lap USAC National Midget Car feature on
Sunday after the race was postponed on Saturday due to rain. Lewis
passed defending series champion Dave Darland on lap 15 and led the
remainder of the race to capture the win. Darland finished in second
place followed by previous race winner Dave Steele in third. Aaron
Fike and Ron Gregory rounded out the top five. Dave Steele, with two
wins and Sunday's third place finish, stands on top of the series
point standings with 191 points. Dave Darland (171), Aaron Fike (151),
J.J. Yeley (149) and Tracy Hines (104) round out the top five. The
next scheduled race for the Midget Car Series is at Hawkeye Downs
Speedway May 3, in Cedar Rapids, IA. WELD RACING SILVER CROWN
SERIES
Forty-five cars were entered in qualifying which was contested on
Saturday. Jason Leffler set fast time of 26.227 seconds on the
Nazareth mile. Paul White was second followed by Mike Bliss, Brad
Noffsinger and Dave Steele. Sunday's 100-lap feature was just 35
laps complete when rains returned which stopped the race with Leffler
in the lead. Leffler was followed by Mike Bliss, Paul White, Dave
Steele and J.J. Yeley in second through fifth when the race was
halted. The race was stopped with no winner declared and, as
such, no points awarded. The next event for the Silver Crown Series
will be on May 24, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for a 100-lap race
on dirt.
