MADERA,
CA (April 18) -- J.J. Yeley won his second USAC National Midget Car
race of the season over the weekend at Medera Speedway by leading all
100 laps of the Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic on Friday. The race
is named in honor of Fred Gerhardt--the father of Rick Gerhardt who
owns and operates Hoosier Tire West in Fresno, CA. The event was a
co-sanctioned National/Western Midget Car Series event and included
past USAC champions Tony Stewart and Jason Leffler driving cars owned
by Rick Gerhardt.
Thirty-eight cars took times in qualifying for the
36-car field. J.J. Yeley earned the right to start on the pole after
setting fast time in his Steve Lewis Ford. Yeley's time was 14.012
seconds around the 1/3-mile paved track. Teddy Beach and A.J. Fike
were second and third in qualifying.
In the 100-lap feature, J.J. Yeley and his
Hoosier-shod powered Ford raced to the flag-to-flag win followed by
Teddy Beach, Bobby East, A.J. Fike and Tracy Hines in second through
fifth, respectively. Tony Stewart finished 16th and Jason Leffler
26th. Stewart did however, win Saturday's USAC Western Sprint Car
Series opener at Medera by leading all 50 laps en route to the win.
With the win, Yeley (200) increases his lead over
Bobby East (176) in the USAC National Midget Car Series standings to
24 points. The series will next compete at California's Irwindale
Speedway on April 26th where the Irwindale Twin 125's will be
contested. This event features a $50,000 bonus to any driver who wins
both 25-lap races.
Todd Hunsaker was the winner in the 30-lap USAC
California Ford Focus Midget Car race at Medera Speedway on Friday
night. Hunsaker is the defending series champion.
