LAKEVILLE,
IN (May 21) -- The USAC Series was in action over the weekend with
three races being contested--two in the National Sprint Car Series and
one in the National Midget Car Series. In the National Midget Series
on Friday, J.J. Yeley (right) took the win in the 30-lap feature
at Hawkeye Downs in the Advance Auto Parts Hawkeye Downs opener. It
was Yeley's third win in six races in the series. In the National
Sprint Car Series, Michael Lewis, winner of the previous National
Sprint Car Series race at Winchester Speedway, made it two in-a-row
winning the 40-lap race also at Hawkeye Downs on Friday. While on
Saturday, it was J.J. Yeley capturing his first win of the season in
the series at Terre Haute on dirt. For Yeley, it was his first win of
the season in the series.
USAC NATIONAL MIDGET CAR SERIES
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 16) -- Twenty cars were entered in
qualifying at Hawkeye Downs Speedway and since the USAC National
Midget Car Series competes exclusively on Hoosier tires a Hoosier-shod
winner was a lock. Bobby East was the fastest qualifier circling the
1/2-mile track in 17.843 seconds followed by Tracy Hines and J.J.
Yeley.
There were three heat races contested with A.J. Fike,
Teddy Beach and J.J. Yeley each capturing 8-lap wins.
In the 30 lap feature, Teddy Beach led the first 16
circuits before giving way to J.J. Yeley. Yeley led the remainder of
the way to capture the win--his third in six races this season in the
series. Following Yeley to the stripe was Tracy Hines, A.J. Fike,
Teddy Beach and Bobby East rounding out the top five.
J.J. Yeley leads the National Sprint Car Series
standings with 341 points followed by Bobby East with 333 points.
The series will next compete on Saturday, May 24, at
Indianapolis Raceway Park in the 58th "Night Before the 500"
race.
USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SERIES
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 16) -- Twenty-two cars posted times in
qualifying at Hawkeye Downs Speedway's paved 1/2-mile track and since
the race was on pavement, the Hoosier brand was the only brand
present. Dave Darland was fast qualifier with his lap of 17.857
seconds followed by J.J. Yeley and Jay Drake.
Tracy Hines, Bud Kaeding and Michael Lewis were each
heat race winners.
In the feature, Michael Lewis led all but one of the
40 race laps en route to picking up his second series win in a row.
Lewis lost the lead for just one circuit (lap 23) to Jason McCord
before regaining control of the race on lap 24. Following Lewis to the
finish line was Bobby East, Jay Drake, J.J. Yeley and Jason McCord.
TERRE HAUTE, IN (May 17) -- Forty-five cars posted
times in qualifying at Terre Haute's Action Track. The dirt surface
meant that the competitors could ride on any tire brand during
the event. J.J. Yeley, using the Hoosier brand, set fast time with his
lap of 19.329 seconds around the 1/2-mile track.
There were four heat races with three Hoosier-shod
winners. J.J. Yeley, Cory Kruseman and Tony Elliott each won their
respective heats on Hoosier tires.
In the feature, J.J. Yeley led every lap of the 30-lap
race en route to his second win in as many nights. Yeley was followed
by Cory Kruseman, Boston Reid, Levi Jones and Bud Kaeding as the
Hoosier brand captured the top five spots in the night's feature
race.
J.J. Yeley continues to lead the USAC National Sprint
Car Series with 309 points followed by Tracy Hines with 260 points.
The series will be back in action on Wednesday, May
21, at Anderson Speedway.
