LAKEVILLE,
IN (May 6) -- The USAC National Sprint Car Series was in action over the
weekend with Saturday's race contested on the 1/2-mile dirt track at
Eldora Speedway followed with another 30-lapper on the paved
1/2-mile of Winchester Speedway on Sunday. Young Boston Reid captured
the win at Eldora, while Michael Lewis led the final five laps en
route to the win at Winchester. Both wins were achieved while
riding atop Hoosier racing tires.
ROSSBURG, OH (May 3) -- The USAC Series held
the 21st annual "Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic" on Saturday
at Eldora Speedway as part of its Border Wars IX. A huge 46-car field
was on hand for qualifying on the famous Ohio half-mile track. J.J.
Yeley set fast time with his lap of 16.324 seconds in the Tony Stewart
Sponsored #20.
In heat race action, Hoosier's RD12 compound was the
recipe to beat winning three of the four preliminary heat races. J.J.
Yeley, Rusty McClure and Tracy Hines were the three Hoosier-shod heat
race winners using the RD12.
In the B-main, Boston Reid made a last-lap pass of
Brian Gerster to capture the win after finishing fifth in his heat.
The win, combined with his fifth fastest time in qualifying placed the
20-year-old hot-shoe on the front row for the 30-lap feature.
In the feature, Boston Reid took command at the drop
of the green flag with Bud Kaeding, Tracy Hines and J.J. Yeley in tow.
Reid, who opted to run the 30-lap race using a Hoosier RD12 for his
left rear selection and a slightly tougher D12 as his right rear
compound choice. The choice was obviously the correct one as Reid led
the entire race en route to the win--his first at Eldora.
Last year's defending series champion Tracy Hines settled
for second place. Hines opted to go with a RD12/D15 (left rear/right
rear) combination, while Bud Kaeding took home the final podium spot
using a pair of RD12's.
All told, Team-Hoosier captured the top five spots in
the USAC feature. Dickie Gaines finished fourth followed by J.J. Yeley
in fifth. The USAC Sprint Car Series has no tire-rule when they
compete on dirt, while Hoosier tires are required when the series
races on pavement.
The event was attended by Hoosier Engineer Jon Huffman
and Hoosier Tire Midwest's Johnny Summers. Huffman provided the
details for this report.
WINCHESTER, IN (May 4) -- Twenty-one cars were
on hand on Sunday to do battle on the paved 1/2-mile high banks of
Winchester Speedway. Dave Steele set fast time with his lap of 14.277
seconds. Tracy Hines was second followed by Brian Tyler.
After winning the previous night, Boston Reid showed
he is no slouch on pavement by winning the first heat race of the
night, while Michael Lewis and Eric Gordon won the second and third
heats.
In the 30-lap feature, Eric Gordon took the early race
lead. Gordon lead the first 25 circuits before giving way to Michael
Lewis. Lewis led the remainder of the way to take the win in the
"Rich Vogler Classic" over Tracy Hines and Eric
Gordon.
Dave Steele and J.J. Yeley rounded out the top five.
Boston Reid finished 13th.
The winner of this year's Border Wars IX was Tracy
Hines.
Defending series champion Tracy Hines leads the USAC
Sprint Car Series standings with 190 points followed by J.J. Yeley
(176) and Bud Kaeding (137). Jay Drake, P.J. Jones, Eric Gordon,
Boston Reid, Brian Tyler, Dave Darland and Cory Kruseman round out the
top ten in the standings.
The next National Sprint Car Series race is on May
16th, at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, IA and since the race
is on pavement, all the competitors will be using Hoosier tires. The
USAC National Sprint Car Series will then be in action on dirt the
next day at Terre Haute's Action Track.
