ATTICA,
OH (June16) -- The 3rd annual Buckeye Nationals got underway last
night in the United States Auto Club (USAC) Series with Jon Stanbrough
capturing the Sprint Car Series win using a Hoosier D10 right rear
tire, while Dave Darland took the lead from Teddy Beach on lap 24 of
the 30-lap Midget Car Series feature race at Attica Raceway Park. The
Buckeye Nationals consists of four consecutive nights of racing at
four different dirt tracks in Ohio. The USAC National Midget Car
Series competes exclusively on Hoosier tires, while the USAC National Sprint
Car Series uses Hoosier tires only when competing on pavement, while
having no tire-rule when the series competes on dirt.
USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SERIES
Forty-four cars jammed the pits attempting to win the opening round of
action in the Buckeye Nationals with 36 drivers riding on Hoosier
tires. Jon Stanbrough was the fastest qualifier among the 44 hopefuls
with a lap of 14.345 seconds around the 1/3-mile clay oval. Stanbrough
rode on Hoosier's softest compound offering--a D10. Fifteen of the 16
fastest qualifiers rode atop the Hoosier brand.
The four heat race winners were Derek Scheffel (RD12),
Tom Hessert, John Ivy (D10), and Bud Kaeding. Jon Stanbrough also won
the 12-lap semi race on the D10 compound.
In the 30-lap feature, 19 of the 23 starters rode on
Hoosier tires. Bud Kaeding, who started third, motored to the lead at the
end of lap one and led the race's first 18 laps before giving way to 2003
USAC Triple Crown Champion J.J. Yeley. Yeley led through lap 24, before Kaeding
reassumed the lead. Kaeding led the remainder of the race to capture
the opening night Buckeye National win. His winning tire
combination was a D10/RD12 (LR/RR) set up. Jon Stanbrough finished in
second place using the same rear tire combination as the race winner.
Cory Kruseman finished in third place on a pair of RD12's. Jay Drake
took fourth place giving the Hoosier brand a 1-2-3-4 finish.
Jay Drake currently leads the USAC National Sprint Car
Series drivers standings with 461 points followed by Cory Kruseman
with 376 points.
USAC NATIONAL MIDGET CAR SERIES
Thirty-seven cars took to the track in the USAC National Midget Car
Series with all competitors riding on the Hoosier brand as a result of
the Hoosier-only tire-rule employed in the series on all track
surfaces.
The evening began with four heat races being contested
with Todd Beach, Teddy Beach, Danny Stratton and Brain Gerster each
capturing wins in their respective 10-lap heats. In the 12-lap semi,
Bobby East was the winner.
In the 30-lap feature, Teddy Beach led from the drop
of the green flag. Beach was the race leader through lap 23, before
Dave Darland moved to the front of the 23-car field using a mandated
Hoosier D12 left rear and a Hoosier SP2 right rear. (Series
competitors can use either a Hoosier SP2, SP3 or SP4.) Brian Gerster
finished in second place followed by Teddy Beach, Davey Ray and Jerry
Coons, Jr.
Bobby East, who finished in 7th place, is atop the
USAC National Midget Car Series standings with 378 points followed by
Josh Wise with 290 points. Wise finished in 6th place Wednesday night.
Dave Darland is in third with 263 points.
Both series will be back in action tonight, June 17th,
at Freemont (OH) Speedway. Hoosier compounder Jon Huffman attended the
race and provided the details used in this report. Jon will also be at
Freemont tonight as the Buckeye Nationals continue.
