TERRE
HAUTE, IN (June 1) -- Kokomo, Indiana's Tony Elliott, driving his
Chevy-Nolen #20, won the 100-lap USAC Silver Crown Series Sumar
Classic at the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday. The race had 19
of 26 starters electing to ride on board Hoosier tires. After all the
dust had settled, another 1-2-3 finish was in the books for
Team-Hoosier. Elliott, after starting clear back in the 14th position,
steadily worked his way through the field en route to collecting the
$9,150 win. J.J. Yeley and Tracy Hines finished second and third,
respectively.
Derek Davidson won the Pole Award for the event after
circling the 1/2-mile track in 20.797 seconds for an average speed of
86.551 mph on a Hoosier D12/RD12 combination.
The marathon 100-lap race on dirt began with fourth
starting J.J. Yeley charging into the lead. Yeley led the race's first
48 circuits before giving way to Jerry Coons, Jr. On lap 58, Kyle
Steffens flipped bringing out a red flag stopping the event. Steffens
was not injured and the race resumed with Coons in the lead. It
appeared that Coons riding on a Hoosier D12/D20 combination was en
route to the win when, on lap 85, he spun out--giving the lead to Tony
Elliott who had patiently worked his way through the field from the
14th starting position.
Elliott led the remainder of the race to collect the
win and the $9,150 top prize. Elliott elected to run the entire
100-lap race on a D12/D20 set-up, as did the second and third place
finishers, J.J. Yeley and Tracy Hines. Yeley pocketed $5,450 and Hines
earned $3,000 for their respective finishes.
Neil Cowman, Hoosier Open Wheel Dirt Product Manager,
attended the exciting race and was assisted by Hoosier Tire Midwest's
Johnny Summers. Cowman commented, "Most of the teams riding on
Hoosier tires elected to go with a D20 on their right rear for the
100-lap race."
Cowman added, "The D20's looked great. They had
very little wear and if conditions are the same for next year's event,
I wouldn't be surprised if several teams opt to run the D15 compound
on their right rear positions."
Dave Steele currently leads the USAC Silver Crown
Series with 170 points, followed by J.J. Yeley with 150 points and
Jason McCord with 144 points. All three drivers competed in the
100-lap race on the Hoosier brand.
The next scheduled competition in the Silver Crown
Series on June 15-16 at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain,
CO.
The USAC Silver Crown Series allows any brand of tire
to be run when the series competes on dirt, while it elects to run
exclusively on Hoosier tires when they compete on pavement.
