INDIANAPOLIS,
IN (July 31) -- Jason McCord passed J.J. Yeley with seven laps
remaining in the J.D. Byrider 100, in the USAC Weld Racing Silver
Crown Series on Thursday at IRP preventing Yeley from notching his
record 20th USAC National win of the season. Yeley looked to be on his
way to making history after setting fast time among the 47 hopefuls
and then leading the first 93 laps of the 100-lap feature race before
being reeled in by Anderson, Indiana's Jason McCord. It was McCord's
first Silver Crown win of the season and was worth $9,100. The
exciting race was also attended by Hoosier Manager of Contract Sales
and Open Wheel Asphalt Product Manager Irish Saunders. The USAC Series
uses only Hoosier tires when the series competes on pavement.
Forty-seven cars were registered in qualifying with 44
cars posting times. J.J. Yeley set fast time of the night with a
21.000 second lap (117.600 mph) on the Indianapolis Raceway Park
.686-mile oval. Dave Steele was second followed by Bobby East, Carl
Edwards and Brian Tyler.
In the two 15-lap qualifying races in which
competitors with poor qualifying efforts could gain entry into the
night's feature race, Chet Fillip and Michael Lewis were the winners.
In the 100-lap feature, J.J. Yeley took the lead from
the outset setting a blistering pace in hopes of winning his 20th
National win of the season. But the story of the night became that of
Jason McCord, who after starting 15th, worked his way through the
field to contend for the win with less than ten to go. On lap 94, the
driver of the #4 car passed Yeley for the lead. From there, McCord
went on to win by about six car lengths over Yeley, who will have
to wait for #20. Following McCord and Yeley to the line was Carl
Edwards, Dave Darland and Dave Steele.
Hoosier's Irish Saunders commented after the race,
"It was a great race. I was proud to be here to possibly see
history had J.J. (Yeley) won." Saunders added, "As it was,
watching Jason McCord dice his way from way back in the field to
eventually take the win was really thrilling, not only for me, but
everyone in attendance."
J.J. Yeley remains atop the driver standings with 364
points followed by Dave Steele with 334 points.
The next USAC Silvercrown race is August 16th, at the
Illinois State Fairgrounds.
