SPRINGFIELD,
IL (August 22, 2009) -- Cole Whitt (center) captured his first career USAC
Silver Crown Series win Saturday at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Whitt,
making just his third series start, led all 100 laps en route to winning the Tony
Bettenhausen 100 on the historic 1-mile track in Springfield. Whitt was
followed to the line by Jon Stanbrough and Levi Jones giving the Hoosier tire
brand a spectacular 1-2-3 finish.
Twenty-seven USAC Silver Crown cars were entered for Saturday's 100-lapper.
In qualifying, A.J. Fike used Hoosier tires to set fast time of the event
circling the 1-mile oval in 29.618 seconds. Fike was followed by Jon Stanbrough,
Dave Darland, Levi Jones, Tracy Hines and Cole Whitt in second though sixth, respectively.
A 6-car inversion placed the sixth fastest qualifier, Cole Whitt, on the
pole alongside Tracy Hines.
Whitt immediately jumped out into the race lead as the green flag
waved.
While the race was slowed three time for cautions, Whitt led all 100 laps in
claiming the win before an appreciative crowd.
Hoosier Tire Midwest-Indy's Tony Burghardt was on hand to service the event
and helped prepare the race winner's tires for the big race.
Cole Whitt was followed to the finish line by John Stanbrough in second and
Levi Jones in third.
The trio were all using a Hoosier F55/F95 (left rear/right rear) combination
which worked well both in qualifying and in the 100-mile race.
Just three races now remain on the USAC Silver Crown Series schedule to
close out the 2009 season.
Next up, the series will be under the lights for a 100-lapper at the DuQuoin
(IL) State Fairgrounds, September 6th.
